The Treatment Plant Operator II performs of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned treatment plant rounds; inspect, monitor, troubleshoot, performance test and document plant processes by reading plant equipment gauges, dials, graphs, online analyzers, computer screens, meters, SCADA systems and other instrumentation.

  • Operate and adjust treatment plant pumps, motors, feeders and other equipment to maintain appropriate plant operations.

  • Maintain, compile and update plant operations logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operational activities.

  • Mix and add treatment chemicals; install and replace chlorine cylinder tanks; ensure adequate chemical application according to regulations and guidelines.

  • Install, maintain, repair, modify, troubleshoot and service plant operations machinery and equipment including pumps, valves, motors, meters, tanks, reservoirs, feeders, and online analyzers; change lubrications.

  • Collect and document liquid and solid samples and perform a variety of routine water quality laboratory tests; work closely with the laboratory on testing processes; monitor laboratory results; collect water samples as required by the all regulatory agencies.

  • Perform general plant facility maintenance such as cleaning, painting and repairing plant facilities; perform various grounds maintenance duties as required.

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment including backhoes, loaders, scrapers, forklifts, dump trucks, truck-mounted sludge/compost mixers, and tractor trailer combinations; assist in unloading chemicals as necessary.

  • Complies with all OSHA and ASUS safety standards and practices as they pertain to equipment, facility operations and chemical handling

  • Coordinate construction, maintenance, material selection and repair activities with maintenance, laboratory, contractors, vendors and other staff.

  • As assigned, participate in a variety of special projects such as construction of piping, electrical, and structural systems related to assigned work area.

  • Participate in the development of goals and procedures for water or wastewater treatment activities; gather and analyze data; develop a variety of reports.

  • Work with a variety of vendors, outside contractors and the general public on water or wastewater activities; answer questions and resolve conflicts.

  • Perform related duties as required.

  • May require after hour work due to 24-hour operation

  • Available for emergency response, 24-hours/day, seven days/week.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License issued by the state where employed.

  • Must take and pass Federal OSHA, US Army Corps of Engineers, and/or State Mandated Safety training, with annual refresher courses, as required by the associated regulations for this position. Such training will be provided by the Company and compliance is mandatory.

  • State Water Treatment Plant Operator 2 or State Wastewater Treatment Plant 2 certification

  • State Water Distribution Operator 2/B certification or State Wastewater Collection 2/B preferred

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include standing for extended periods of time, lifting heavy loads, kneeling, crawling, and climbing

  • Ability to understand basic math and chemistry and apply knowledge to water/wastewater treatment process.

  • Must possess knowledge and comprehension of safety practices for general construction and handling of all materials used in water and wastewater system operations, to include liquid and gaseous chemicals, as well as hazardous solids, confined space entry, competent excavation, electrical safety, etc., while being under close supervision. Application of such practices is mandatory.

  • Ascertains general knowledge of water system operations, control settings, and plant operations.

  • Communication skills including demonstrated fluency with reading, writing, and speaking the English language.

  • Use and operate self-contained breathing apparatus and/or respiratory equipment

  • Two (2) years as a Treatment Plant Operator I/ or two (2) years of water supply or wastewater collection experience in the water utility industry

  • State Grade II Water Treatment Plant Operator Certification or State Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification

  • State Grade 2/B Water Distribution Operator or State Grade 2/C Wastewater Collection preferred

  • Intermediate math skills

  • Knowledge of hydraulics, chemistry and biology

  • Knowledge of basic plumbing skills

  • Recognize unusual, inefficient or dangerous operating conditions.

  • Principles and practices of water or wastewater treatment plant operations.

  • Operating principles of plant equipment such as valves, pumps and motors.

  • Methods and techniques of maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting water or wastewater plant equipment and processes.

  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to water or wastewater treatment.


  • Working in confined space.

  • Working in areas exposed to noise and chemicals. Work requires the use of appropriate PPE (e.g. hearing and chemical protection devices).

  • Working in extreme weather conditions.

  • Lifting and carrying loads up to 50 lbs.

  • Performing work up to limits of elevated water storage tanks.
