SC Department of Public Safety Registered Nurse II in Statewide, South Carolina

To provide direct nursing care to juveniles receiving services in a secure facility of the Department of Juvenile Justice in accordance with Health Services and Department protocols/standing orders and policies, the SC Nurse Practice Act, and accepted professional nursing standards. Safely administers and documents all medications and treatments as ordered by a physician, dentist, nurse practitioner, or another nurse (in accordance with approved standing orders or protocols). Provides feedback to the prescriber regarding compliance with medication and treatment regimens. Assesses the health of the juveniles during sick call and during their periodic routine health assessment. Develops, implements and evaluates a plan of care. Refers juveniles to a higher level of heath care provider as needed. Provides health education to the juveniles as needed. Maintains documentation of each encounter with a juvenile using an Electronic Health Record. Assists with orientation and training of new staff. Monitors the health care needs of juveniles with chronic health problems and those who have had surgery. Provides consultation to institution director and/ or his/her staff regarding the heath care needs of a juvenile or the population on the campus to include preventative health measures. Represents the heath interests of the juvenile at multidisciplinary treatment team meetings. Rotates nursing on-call duties. Participates in quality improvement activities conducted by Health Services. Actively participates in the Performance-based Standards (Pbs) activities on the campus; responsible for the health related aspects of the campus' Performance Improvement Plan. Maintains a safe and sanitary environment and follows basic infection control practices. Preforms other related duties as required/requested.
Minimum and Additional Requirements:
Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in South Carolina; a bachelor's degree in nursing with two years' experience in a relevant clinical area (e.g., pediatric, medical-surgical, or public health nursing); or an associate's degree in nursing or a diploma in nursing with at least three years of experience in a relevant clinical area (e.g., pediatric nursing, medical-surgical, or public health nursing).
Must have knowledge of principles and practices of nursing and prevention of disease and injury. Must have the ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with all levels of personnel; must be self-directed, and have the ability to establish priorities and to plan and organize work; ability to establish the confidence and cooperation of juveniles receiving services. Must remain current in BLS. Must have and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license, and have the ability to travel within the state. Subject to the possibility of physical assault, property destruction and infections. Must wear personal protective equipment to prevent infection. Must have a phone or pager that DJJ can use to contact for urgent or emergent situations, and be able to respond capably to emergencies. Function with minimal supervision of a Nurse Administrator/Manger I or II; annual performance reviews; follows department, state, and federal guidelines, policies and procedures.
