Stanford University's LBRE Application Solutions group has an opening for a Platform engineer. This is a new position joining a stellar team of technology professionals that support the growing needs of our business units. We support the Land, Buildings and Real Estate (LBRE) organization at Stanford for their technology solution needs.

The LBRE department is responsible for the design, construction, operations and maintenance of buildings, grounds, utilities, parking, and transportation systems at Stanford. The Application Systems Group is responsible for application development, implementation, and support for business units who work to ensure that LBRE provides world class services as “caretakers of the legacy” that is Stanford University.

What would you do? You will be working with the Application solutions team, reporting to the Associate Director of Technology, to establish a robust, secure, stable and solid multi-technology platform to support the various application solutions at LBRE. A newly established role within our organization, the position will manage the platform layer of our systems and server infrastructure working with system admins, developers, analysts, DBAs and vendors.

Under general direction, develop, install, configure, optimize, and maintain integrity of the application platform environment serving the websites, applications, databases and GIS systems at LBRE.

  • Collaborate with the development, infrastructure and DBA teams to develop/migrate and maintain important application platforms for web servers, application servers, databases and GIS systems
  • Perform vulnerability analysis, manage the security patches and ensure adherence to the strict Stanford security requirements
  • Exert ownership to develop and maintain the local and cloud application platforms,
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Ensure critical applications are designed and optimized for high availability and disaster recovery


  • Play the role of a liaison between system administrators and developers, owning the platform tier for on-premise and cloud solutions
  • Perform vulnerability analysis, manage the security patches and ensure adherence to the strict Stanford security requirements
  • Build, install, configure, analyze, tune, and troubleshoot various application and database platforms to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Troubleshoot complex problems for which the analysis and resolution require extensive knowledge of many diverse system components
  • Resolve difficult system problems and provide consultation or training.
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new technologies, and integrate systems into the computing environment.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers.
  • Act as liaison with system administrators, network admins, developers and various departments across campus.
  • Facilitate vendor relationships.
  • Drive scope definition, requirements analysis, functional and technical design, capacity planning and management, application build, product configuration, unit testing, and production deployment of application platforms
  • Design highly secure systems that meet or exceed Stanford’s security requirements
  • Enhances, evangelizes, and contributes to DevOps development principles, activities and complex development tasks
  • Ensure critical applications are designed and optimized for high availability and disaster recovery
  • Identify applicable new technologies through research, collaboration with peers, and participation in standards organizations, industry groups, panels, etc.
  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new technologies, and integrate systems into the computing environment.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with multiple types of operating systems (Linux and windows)
  • Experience with managing an integrated computing environment.
  • Experience with one or more programming languages (Ruby, Python, Perl, Javascript)
  • Extensive experience in multiple programming languages for system development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security protocols.
  • Ability to manage shared resources and perform moderately complex tasks.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to train to others in applications and operating system fundamentals.
  • Experience with middleware and infrastructure.
  • Deep understanding of cloud architecture and implementation features (OS, multi-tenancy, virtualization, orchestration, elastic scalability)
  • Experience with SaaS and PaaS platforms (ServiceNow, SalesForce, etc.)
  • Experience in the design, development, and deployment of large heterogeneous distributed systems and environments
  • Functional understanding of TCP/IP Networking, DNS, firewalls and load balancers.
  • Past DevOps experience is desired but not required.
  • Past experiences in infrastructure tool development and maintenance is very helpful.
  • Solid understanding of distributed web application architecture is helpful
  • Knowledge of high availability systems is desirable.
  • Experience with Containerization (Docker Technologies, Kubernetes, etc.) desirable, but not required.
  • Experience with CI / code deployment platform such as Atlassian Bamboo.
  • Experience with version control systems (SVN, Git, etc.)
