Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums. May treat diseases of nerve, pulp, and other dental tissues affecting oral hygiene and retention of teeth. May fit dental appliances or provide preventative care.


The primary duties of this position are as follows:

Use masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect patients and self from infectious diseases.

· Protect patients or staff members using safety equipment.

Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, or other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.

· Examine mouth, teeth, gums, or related facial structures.

· Operate diagnostic or therapeutic medical instruments or equipment.

· Operate diagnostic imaging equipment.

Make models and measurements for dental appliances, such as dentures, to fit patients. Teach patients about diets, flossing, the use of fluoride and other aspects of dental care.

Administer anesthetics to limit the amount of pain experienced by patients during procedures.

· Administer anesthetics or sedatives to control pain.

Use dental air turbines, hand instruments, dental appliances, or surgical implements.

· Operate diagnostic or therapeutic medical instruments or equipment.

Formulate plan of treatment for patient's teeth and mouth tissue.

· Develop medical treatment plans.

Diagnose and treat diseases, injuries, or malformations of teeth, gums, or related oral structures and provide preventive or corrective services.

· Diagnose dental conditions.

Write prescriptions for antibiotics or other medications.

· Prescribe medications.

Design, make, or fit prosthodontic appliances, such as space maintainers, bridges, or dentures, or write fabrication instructions or prescriptions for denturists or dental technicians.

· Design medical devices or appliances.

· Fabricate medical devices.

· Adjust prostheses or other assistive devices.

Advise or instruct patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, or oral health care services.

· Advise patients on preventive care techniques.

Fill pulp chamber and canal with endodontic materials. Treat exposure of pulp by pulp capping, removal of pulp from pulp chamber, or root canal, using dental instruments.

Remove diseased tissue, using surgical instruments.

· Operate diagnostic or therapeutic medical instruments or equipment.

· Operate on patients to treat conditions.

Manage business aspects such as employing or supervising staff or handling paperwork or insurance claims.

· Supervise patient care personnel.

Analyze or evaluate dental needs to determine changes or trends in patterns of dental disease.

· Analyze patient data to determine patient needs or treatment goals.

Apply fluoride or sealants to teeth.

Perform oral or periodontal surgery on the jaw or mouth.

Eliminate irritating margins of fillings and correct occlusions, using dental instruments.

Bleach, clean, or polish teeth to restore to natural color. Produce or evaluate dental health educational materials.



Dentist must have degree from an accredited dental school and have passed the National Dental Boards. DMD or DDS Degree required.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, patients, patients’ guardians and the general public.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Knowledge and Abilities:

· Knowledge of the essential functions, practices and procedures of a dental clinic and office.

· Knowledge of ADA Coding.

· Knowledge of and ability to diagnose and treat a variety of oral health diseases and injuries in a General Practice Dentistry model setting.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality of information, patient financial and clinical information.

· Ability to read, write legibly, calculate mathematical figures and medication doses.

· Ability to work and interact effectively and positively with other staff members to build and to enhance teamwork in the clinic and office.

· Ability to communicate in a professional and courteous manner.

· Ability to perform oral health exams.

Certificates and Licenses:

Current Dental License in State of Practice.
