Position Summary

Virgin Galactic (VG) is seeking an experienced Quality Engineer (QE) with a strong background in the aerospace industry. The primary task of this role will be to ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures, and work rules to develop, support, and maintain an AS9100 compliant Quality Management System (QMS). The Quality Engineer will possess a thorough knowledge of the aerospace industry and regulatory environment. The successful candidate will work directly with quality, maintenance, and engineering to fully understand the operational requirements and to ensure company requirements, processes, and procedures are properly executed and documented. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain relationships at all levels in order to identify and resolve obstacles and facilitate results. Additionally, the QE may be required to help with flight vehicle inspections in support of maintenance and other activities. This is a full-time position at Virgin Galactic’s Mojave, CA test flight facility with permanent relocation to Virgin Galactic’s base of operations, Spaceport America / Las Cruces, NM.

  • Focal for development and execution of the Virgin Galactic QMS

  • Interface with quality, maintenance, engineering, and suppliers to ensure that requirements are met and correctly documented

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain an AS9100 compliant QMS

  • Responsible for setting up audit criteria and schedules and loading into VG’s electronic database

  • Will be the SME and administrator for the VG Quality module electronic database

  • Participate in process improvement development and planning in a Team based environment

  • Develop and maintain required QMS based metrics

  • Perform process quality audits and internal audits of the QMS

  • Coordinate with suppliers on product quality issues, escapes, and development of corrective actions

  • Analyse non-conformance trends to evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions

  • Successfully handle the quality audit process, including planning, preparing, executing, reporting results, and follow-up

  • Comply with safety regulations and promote a safe working environment

Basic Qualifications

  • Proven hands-on experience in an aerospace manufacturing, assembly, and/or operational environment

  • In depth understanding of the testing, inspection, quality issues and certification of aircraft, including aircraft systems

  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, and FAA regulations and industry standards

  • Advanced problem solving, including analyzing, investigating, and following up

  • Proven experience in quantitative data analysis, measurement systems, reporting methodologies, and MRB processes

  • Knowledge of business systems including Microsoft Office – knowledge of Ultramain is a plus

  • Being innovative in tactical matters, breaking down barriers, and proposing alternate solutions for process improvement

  • Attention to detail and follow through


  • Bachelor’s Degree in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) required

  • ASQ certification preferred

  • Six Sigma certification desired

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Ten years’ experience or equivalent education and experience managing a QMS required

  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate is a strong plus

  • Willing to work overtime, travel and be on-call as necessary
