3M is seeking a Senior Product Development Engineer – Automotive Glazing for the Electronics and Energy Business Group Lab located in Maplewood, MN. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.

Job Summary:

The person hired for the position of Senior Product Development Engineer-Automotive Glazing will be responsible for driving new product concepts and development in the area of films for automotive windshield and window applications. The role will involve working closely with global commercialization teams including business development and marketing teams to translate customer needs into new product technical requirements and participate in global teams to bring new products to market. Focus will be on developing knowledge set of glazing and lamination processes, automotive glazing testing and familiarity with standards (impact, environmental, acoustics, for example), adhesives and test method development.

The Product Development Engineer will develop deep understanding of automotive head up display systems and automotive glazing and lamination, performance and durability requirements through direct customer and strategic partner engagement to enable concept generation and commercialization of novel new products.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work with application engineers to translate customer requirements into product requirements

  • Interact with customers to understand their needs and translate that into new product concepts

  • Investigate new materials and processes internally and externally to develop new product concepts. Lead lab bench work and pilot line evaluation and experimentation.

  • Develop prototypes and data packages to support customer engagement

  • Lead and/or participate in global teams to ensure on-time product launch and alignment with key customers

  • Leverage and collaborate with the Corporate Labs to drive break-through solutions in material and process development

  • Effective communication, interpersonal and team skills to perform well in a variety of cross-functional team situations

  • Initiates or contributes to the development of Intellectual Property

  • Develop and scale-up winning new product opportunities.

  • Directing technicians and data collection and analysis

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a product development environment

  • Experience with automotive glazing and lamination

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science or related discipline from an accredited university

  • Minimum of five (5) years working in a product or application development of auto, optical and/or visual display products

  • Capability and familiarity with optical display, window and film testing equipment and methods

  • Experience with automotive industry including but not limited to experience with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs), tier 1, tier 2 and/or automotive glass or material suppliers

  • Experience translating customer demands into the technical aspects of applications

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage projects in a fast-moving environment

  • Strong communication skills (written, oral and presentation)

  • Microsoft Office proficient

Location: Maplewood, MN

Travel: May include up to 25% domestic/international travel
