Parks & Recreation Department. Seasonal positions (Athletic Field Maintenance, Golf Course Maintenance Summer Laborer & Parks & Recreation Summer Laborer), no benefits. Hiring rate: $10.58 per hour. Applicants who have worked at least one previous season with the Parks & Recreation Department may be eligible for a higher starting salary that is commensurate with applicant qualifications.
All positions are responsible for performing various grounds, field, park and golf course maintenance tasks, including general maintenance of park facilities and grounds, mowing, string trimming, grass cutting and tree trimming; performing light construction, including painting, removing debris and manually excavating soil; cleaning restrooms; collecting trash; preparing facility for activities; loading and unloading supplies and landscape material. All positions require general knowledge of cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficiently; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment assigned; skill in the use of hand tools and equipment assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
Athletic Field Maintenance position is responsible for performing infield preparation; line painting; daily maintenance of athletic fields; facility preparation for practices and games.
Golf Course Maintenance Summer Laborer position is responsible for sand bunker grooming; daily maintenance of golf course and grounds; preparing golf course for play.
Parks & Recreation Summer Laborer position is responsible for mowing; landscaping; daily maintenance of City parks and facilities; assisting with installation, maintenance and repair projects.
Physical Requirements: This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants must be 18 years of age before April 1, 2018. Must possess or be able to acquire a valid VA driver's license within 30 days of hire date.
Successful applicants must successfully complete a criminal background check, physical, drug screen and DMV record check.
