Alexion Pharmaceuticals Director, Portfolio and Country Communications in Boston, Massachusetts
The Director, Portfolio and Country Communications is a pivotal member of the Portfolio and Country Communications team, an integral part of Corporate Communications. She/he is responsible for the strategy, planning, and hands-on execution of global and regional/local communications initiatives in support of the marketed and pipeline products, and the image of the company.
The successful candidate should have a strong and broad background in communications in the bio/pharmaceutical industry, including internal communication and robust media relations experience (traditional and social media), strong written and verbal communication skills, and a proven track record of working successfully with both executives and subject matter experts.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Develop and execute programs in support of the global strategies for Portfolio and Country and Corporate Communications to help develop/build the company’s franchises and to raise Alexion’s reputation as an innovative, responsible and trusted leader in the treatment of rare diseases, and a partner of choice in the development of new therapies for rare diseases.
Integrate communications efforts with Commercial/Marketing, Government Affairs, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Investor Relations and Internal Communications teams to ensure strategic, consistent and effective communications on key topics/issues.
Within a global matrix, lead on communications for defined disease areas at global level (Complement or Metabolic Franchise) and broader corporate communications initiatives at regional/local level in defined regions/key markets (e.g. Canada or the JAPAC or LatAm regions).
Write or oversee the development with agencies, and manage the internal review process for communication materials (press releases, statements, talking points, Q&As, fact sheets, etc.).
Monitor and manage issues that could impact franchise success or company reputation.
Lead and manage product-related media relations. Develop trusted working relationships with reporters; create/seize engagement opportunities; evaluate/respond to requests; develop messaging and materials, and prepare executives and subject matter experts for interviews.
Lead the development of companywide global disease awareness campaigns.
Support the Executive Director (e.g. related to new launches and major milestones).
Be a team player and pitch-in on various other department projects as the need arises.
12+ years’ of communications experience preferred in pharma/biopharma in Product, Corporate and Global Communication on either the agency or corporate side.
Good understanding of the global regulatory environment in which the company operates, and high ethical standards to ensure both compelling and compliant communication.
Interest in and willingness to understand complex scientific or technical content, and attention to detail in developing messages and materials, which are both compelling and accurate;
Strong strategic planning, organizational and project management skills.
Strong communications and writing skills alongside strong business acumen.
Experience in managing print, video and online production of communications materials.
Hands-on experience with media relations, including social media, and messaging platforms.
Experience in working across multiple departments and regions/markets in a global company, including intercultural awareness and a good understanding of local specificities.
Strong interpersonal skills and integrity, and the ability to build relationships and establish credibility at all levels including subject matter experts and senior executives.
Experience in working seamlessly with external providers, such as PR and graphic design firms.
High degree of self-motivation and organization, can-do attitude and ability to work independently. Be curious to discover new areas and able to absorb information quickly.
Comfort in a fast-moving environment with frequent changes in scope or direction of projects. Embrace and lead change.
Rare disease experience preferred.
Scientific background would be a plus.
