Emory University Controller (SOM) in atlanta, Georgia



  • Working with the Assistant Dean in the Office of Business & Finance for the School of Medicine (SOM), administers all non-sponsored school funds.

  • Establishes and communicates accounting policies and procedures for the SOM to ensure compliance with the University accounting structure and regulations.

  • Develops solutions for complex accounting and financial reporting issues.

  • Monitors and controls SOM funds, including the Operating Budget, one-time funding commitments, capital projects, gifts, endowment income, designated income, auxiliaries, and all other types of funds.

  • Prepares the SOM's financial results both on an interim and annual basis.

  • Designs and develops the framework for the orderly, timely and accurate annual closing and maintaining the books of the SOM.

  • Manages funds flow between the SOM and affiliated institutions (Emory University Hospital, Crawford Long Hospital, Wesley Woods Geriatric Center, The Emory Clinic, Emory Children's Center, Grady Health Systems, the Atlanta-based Veteran's Administration Medical Center, and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta).

  • Designs and implements business processes, systems of internal controls and management reporting structures to facilitate decentralized management and control of funds at the department and division levels.

  • Identifies risk areas, and conducts audits of the SOM and departmental financial operations and internal control systems.

  • Makes recommendations to senior management on areas of responsibility including accounting policies and accurate reporting of financial results.

  • Represents the SOM and the Executive Associate Dean for Fiscal Affairs & Chief Financial Officer on SOM and University committees and with University Offices on matters relating to finance and accounting. Hires, supervises, trains and evaluates the fiscal staff of the Office of Business and Finance.

  • Serves as a key technical resource on financial matters for the Dean's Office, department chairs, and their department administrators.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related discipline and ten years of progressively responsible experience in financial management or auditing .

  • A related master's degree or CPA and experience in higher education or an academic medical center is preferred.

  • Fund accounting and financial reporting knowledge and experience desirable.

  • An understanding of emerging technologies and their application to university information systems and experience in auditing and internal controls desirable.

  • Ability to provide innovative leadership in a dynamic environment and to work collaboratively with multiple constituents.
