Job Description:

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of ten plus years of experience in Design & Planning for Retail Environments. They will be well-rounded in design concepts, retail environments, brands, construction process, budgeting, bid process, project management, and be intimate with LEED & WELL Build Standards, and will process exceptional communication and people skills. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to guide and manage projects from conceptual planning right through construction as well as lead this department in space transformation initiatives. Qualified candidates will have had experience overseeing large scale Design Development, Contract Development, and Construction Process for multiple projects, coordinating needs for the Client, Architect, Engineer, and General Contractor, as well as managing Client and Compass investments. They will work closely with the Retail Innovations & field operations team in developing these Retail Environments and drive Innovation. Northeast location is preferred.


  • Reports to VP of Retail Innovations.

  • Communicates regularly with other upper management members, Operational Field Managers, and Project Managers on project status.

  • Oversees and leads the Design & Planning team for Retail Innovations.

  • Establishes a best practice approach with peers cross sector on Design & Planning practices, go to market, and aligns with sector strategy.

  • Leads on LEED & WELL Building Standard initiatives as well as innovation impacting the Design & Build industry, and incorporates into our development.

  • Leads transformation of space, environment, hospitality, and new build efforts.

  • Leads relationship building between field division leaders and Retail Innovations Design & Planning team on project process and project life cycle.

  • Focuses on the development of relationship retention between Retail Innovations and our Internal Clients, External clients, and Customers.

  • Creates innovative tools and processes to streamline project dependencies and completion in order to manage client expectations and unify our design & planning teams, partners, and clients.

  • Defines and develops contractual obligations through definition of scope of work for design services, FF&E packages, construction proposals, budgeting process, and buildout execution.

  • Pursues profitability for projects by empowering and realigning human capital and value engineering by effective management of resources.

  • Oversees and approves complete design teams, packages & proposals.

  • Oversees and approves final review process for proposed projects with operations team, Architect, Engineer, and GC to ensure that design meets expectations, project criteria, budget, schedule parameters, and all project terms.

  • Supervises budget process, oversees projects schedules and reconciliations to meet project standards and deliverables that align with sector procedures.

  • Forecasts, identifies and informs of potential hurdles and conflicts to the field and Clients and readjusts timelines and resources accordingly.

  • Liaisons with Brand Managers, Operations teams, Culinary team, Marketing Managers and Project Managers on projects status and project developments.

  • Develops innovative procedures and activities that promote and nurture retail, brand solutions, small site development, and design & planning initiatives.

  • Develops Strategic Alliances to grow the external vendor / partner network that supports all these efforts with and go to market strategy with Design & Planning.

  • Supports Brand partners with implementation & integration into Compass.

  • Works closely with Foodbuy to ensure full compliance and alignment with purchasing efforts, initiatives, and programs.

  • Motivates for continuous improvement and opportunities with a WIN-WIN approach for all parties involved.


  • 10+ years experience in the Design & Planning industry.

  • 5+ years of foodservice / hospitality industry experience.

  • 4 year Bachelor Degree required.

  • LEED AP / WELL Building Standard Certification highly recommended.

  • 10 year proven track record of success in Design / Construction / Project Management, preferably in the foodservice / retail industry.

  • Street Brand experience / knowledge preferred.

  • Intimate Knowledge of Architectural & Engineering Process.

  • Intimate knowledge of Custom Millwork Fabrication, Equipment manufacturing & distribution, and general FF&E knowledge base.

  • AutoCAD / REVIT knowledge / experience essential.

  • Great working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Project, Excel, and PPT essential.

  • Demonstrated experience working under pressure and managing multiple tasks / multiple projects / multiple teams exceeding sector and client expectations.

  • Dedication & Commitment to quality and detail.

  • High level Writing and Presentation skills.

  • High level communication skill, technical skill, and creative skill.

  • Capable of traveling 50% - 60% of the time to meet with clients and operators.

  • Can work remotely - Northeast location is preferred.
