The Respirator Therapist Clinical Specialist administers respiratory care in the Intensive Care Units and General Medical/Surgical areas. Consults with physicians concerning patient's plan of care. Participates in the training and orientation of new employees and instruction of Respiratory Care students. Identifies opportunities for continuous improvements of processes and services on an on-going basis. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Respiratory Care is provided 24 hours a day seven days a week. Schedule may vary according to the needs of the medical center/department and may include weekend, shift, holiday, on-call, and overtime hours.

  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt technique/treatment to age of population served, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, while providing care/service with respect to cultural differences and spiritual needs.

  • Represents Respiratory Care to physicians, nursing personnel, administration, patients and families; maintains positive guest relations regarding all aspects of his/her position

  • Takes initiative to maintain professional development by reading professional journals, attending seminars and conferences; keeps informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking electronic communication and departmental postings, etc.

  • Leads the development of new Respiratory Care Protocols and revise existing protocols according to current evidence based guidelines; determines and promotes Respiratory Care compliance with protocols, guidelines, or recommendations

  • Coordinates the orientation process of new employees. Assists in completing the orientation checklists. Completes orientation process wit the therapist after transfer to their assigned shift

  • Organizes, oversees and evaluates clinical rotations for Respiratory Care students

  • Assumes responsibility for the respiratory care educational development of all members of the health care team involved in patient care

  • Performs clinical patient rounds and attends physician rounds to assist in determining appropriate patient care plans. Serves as a resource to staff regarding current clinical practice

  • Provides input to the supervisors concerning staff assignments, areas for shift or individual improvement and feedback concerns

  • Assists in assessing equipment needs, repairs, evaluation of new equipment/products and preventative maintenance; recommending items for Capital Equipment purchases

  • Assists Case Management, physicians and staff in the discharge planning of patient with complex respiratory needs. Participates in discharge planning team meetings as needed

  • Assists in the review, revision and developing of policies and procedures

  • Oversees respiratory patient education program for patients with respiratory diseases/conditions

Required Registration, Licensure of Certification

  • Current licensure as a Respiratory Therapist by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts

  • Current registration through the National Board for Respiratory Care

  • Current Basic life Support (BLS) verification course, as specified in policy

Preferred Registration, Licensure of Certification

  • Current registration in area of specialty through the National Board for Respiratory Care

Required Education or Experience

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy

Preferred Education or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
