Duties

NOTE: Upon assignment to this position, the incumbent's salary will include two additional steps for assignment to a Head Nurse/Nurse Manager position

The West Palm Beach VA is recruiting for Nurse Managers in the following areas of care:

Surgical Specialty Clinic Nurse Manager: The Surgical Specialty Nurse Manager assumes leadership duties and responsibilities for the following outpatient care units/clinics, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Short Stay Unit (SSU), Surgical Schedulers, GU Chemo team, and the Surgical Step down unit. The Nurse Manager will be an Expert in the area managed with critical care experience to ensure the best possible patient outcomes. The Nurse Manager is a RN that demonstrates the ability to work effectively with professional and supportive personnel to ensure safe patient care and foster positive interactions with veterans and their families/significant others. The Nurse Manager has in-depth knowledge of hospital-wide resources, demonstrates the ability to direct effective care to the above group of patients, and is proficient to assess, plan, initiate, implement, document, and evaluate the patient care and patient flow for assigned areas.

Surgical NM:M-F with variable day shifts to meet the need of the area. 24 hour Surgical Stepdown may require alternate days / night tours as needed.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
  • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship

  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Registration – Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

(2) The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

(3) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

  • MSN Degree
  • Certification in leadership / Surgical Arena (or relevant Certifications to position)
  • Experience in last 3 years of Surgical Clinics, pre-op preparation, post-operative recovery, surgical scheduling and education.
  • Nursing Management experience.

**Professional nursing experience should be documented on the Application for Employment – Nurse and Nurse Anesthetists (VA Form 10-2850a).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, etc, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
