Job Description:


Skill Builders design and provide activities that assist the child and/or family in acquiring, developing and accessing functional skills needed to live successfully in the community. This may include areas such as budgeting, shopping, completing tasks, socialization and activities of daily living. The Skill Builder may also provide hourly respite care services that provide aid in the home, on an emergency or planned basis, which temporarily relieves the family of the caretaking role. Respite activities may include engaging children in recreational activities, transportation, and general supervision.


Plans and implements SkillBuilding activities in accordance to the child’s individualized service plan, using creativity and utilizing community resources

Maintains familiarity with the child’s service plan, evaluates child’s progress in collaboration with ICC and informs ICC of concerns and changes in child’s behavior.

Plans and/or conducts activities in partnership with the child that address the child’s Waiver service plan objectives

Identifies activities that support the targeted developmental tasks, strengths, and/or talents

Assures that selected activities are developmentally appropriate

Models and teaches socially acceptable behaviors

Receives information about the child and family from the ICC including updates on the service plan and safety alerts plan

Prepares a proposed individual calendar on a monthly basis to distribute to each family

Provides SkillBuilding and Respite Services according to Service Plans, attends service plan review when scheduled, and assists in developing goals and objectives.

Ensures proper use of the flex funds as designated in the service plan

Accurately maintains sufficient documentation of goal oriented progress notes.

Maintains relationships with community resources (i.e. schools, social services, and mental health agencies), and generates good public relations at all times.

Regularly communicates with the Individualized Care Coordinator, performs any related duties as assigned and seeks information from the ICC regarding the Skill Builder’s role with a specific child and family

Maintains client confidentiality at all times

Follows and maintains agency policies and procedures in all program areas.

Attends appropriate training and in-service seminars in accordance with agency requirements.

Other job related duties as assigned

Experience and Skills:


Associate’s degree or equivalent in Human Services from a two-year college or technical school, and six (6) months to one (1)year experience working with children (preference given to those with experience working with children of special needs).


Must maintain valid driver’s license. Must maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.
