General Motors Systems Engineer – Long/Short Range Smartphone Communications for Autonomous Features - ENG0031548 in Warren, Michigan

Systems Engineers are recognized subject matter experts in their domain responsible for function and definition of feature content to meet performance requirements and creation of detailed end to end systems design requirements for technical implementation of features/functions. They must comprehend the interfaces and interactions between in-vehicle systems, consumer devices, GM back office and other cloud service environments, at a minimum. The System Engineer will interact across organizations to ensure features/functions are integrated effectively into the vehicle/end to end system and with the suppliers to implement new features/functions.

The following are expected outputs for the Systems Engineer role:

  • Participate with, or in some cases lead Cross-Functional, E2E Feature Development Teams (Feature Owner, System Engineers & other key stakeholders) addressing device, all vehicle and back office systems as necessary for a given feature. For example, this Leader will need to interact with Cybersecurity representatives to ensure components/systems and communication protocols are specified in a secure fashion. Another example would be working with a Cross-Functional autonomous vehicle team to support the design and specification of communication to/from a Smartphone device (some features being providing scheduling, vehicle access and destination requests).
  • Support documentation of Feature Performance Requirements
  • Support Feature Set & Sizing Recommendations
  • System Modeling Tool Requirements
  • Support development of Feature Technical Specification
  • Lead necessary architecture changes, ensuring both changes inside & outside of Infotainment area are completed
  • Provide System Technical Specification and lower level Design Element Specifications
  • Support development of Feature Context Diagram and Data Flow Diagrams (DFD) to the necessary levels of decomposition
  • Allocate System Requirements for Feature
  • Feature Behavioral Model (Generic Requirements Level)
  • System DFMEA/Fault Tree Analysis
  • Field Assessments
  • Support ATW Plans for Feature / Approve New Feature Content
  • Support Validation & Verification plan for feature
  • Peer review team lead
  • Generate infotainment technical solutions for current and new vehicle programs
  • Provides technical leadership for advanced technology development
  • Performs complex design analysis
  • Develops engineering designs
  • Specifies and balances system requirements
  • Plans and implements test and/or development programs
  • Support Design/Release team for production
  • Communicates, coordinates, and consults with engineering departments and customers
  • Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products
  • Travels as required

Basic Required:

  • Understanding of automotive infotainment system operation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of In-vehicle consumer device connectivity & communications, connected vehicle services and infotainment/telematics systems engineering & related communication protocols
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle electrical architectures, body control or other integration control modules & in-vehicle network communications (such as Ethernet, CAN)
  • Demonstrated leader of cross-functional teams
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience
  • Areas of expertise: Applications framework development, APIs and SDKs, OS (Linux, Android, QNX), communication protocols, web services, software development lifecycle, embedded software, cybersecurity & client-server solutions.
  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area required
  • Understanding of back office architectures
  • Exhibits appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals
  • Knowledge of engineering software and systems as it pertains to job-related area
  • High level of oral and written communication skills
  • Candidate should have one of the following engineering degrees: BSE, BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science; or equivalent experience

Basic Preferred:

  • Electrical architecture and/or Electrical systems team experience
  • Working knowledge preferred in following domains: navigation, audio, telematics, Java and other structured languages, HTML5, embedded software knowledge, in-vehicle networking protocols such as Ethernet, CAN and MOST, USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Cellular, speech recognition, security protocols, and HMI design
  • Experience using requirements management applications such as Rational DOORS
  • MS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
