The Department of Revenue's Audit Division is now hiring a full-time, permanent Revenue Auditor 2/Revenue Auditor 2 in-training. The following is a list of geographic locations open for consideration:
Las Vegas/Reno, NV Area OR
Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe, AZ Area
As an Out-of-State Auditor at the Revenue Auditor 2 In-training level (In-training level is at Revenue Auditor 1):
At the entry-level, you'll learn how to audit based on auditing standards, processes and techniques. You will be working under close supervision on either team audits or independently on small to mid-size businesses. As part of the team, you'll learn to evaluate business activities and accounting records to determine if taxpayers are complying with the applicable tax laws and are reporting their tax liability correctly. You'll audit a variety of industries including but not limited to national and international, multi-divisional and vertically integrated; manufacturers, financial institutions, contractors, high technology companies, telecommunications companies, airlines, transportation companies, petroleum companies, health care providers, and department store chains.
Within the first few months you will:
- Complete the 3 week New Auditor Training class (travel to Washington state required, travel costs paid for by employer).
- Participate in training audits with lead auditors to conduct and write up findings.
- Begin independently auditing businesses after initial training.
- Continue to conduct team audits during your tenure in the Audit Division. This enhances your ability to conduct a broader range of audits at all levels of size and complexity.

As an Out-of-State Auditor at the Revenue Auditor 2 level:
You'll be a journey-level auditor independently performing comprehensive audits of small to mid-sized national and multi-national technically diverse business firms, their affiliates, subsidiaries and divisions whose business records are maintained at offices located outside the State of Washington. You'll evaluate business activities and accounting records to determine if taxpayers are in compliance with applicable tax laws and have correctly reported their tax liability. You'll establish or confirm the presence of local nexus with respect to Washington sales using various tools including but not limited to taxpayer interviews, internet research and the Washington Business Activities Questionnaire. You'll audit businesses including but not limited to national and international, multi-divisional and vertically integrated; manufacturers, financial institutions, contractors, high technology companies, telecommunications companies, airlines, transportation companies, petroleum companies, health care providers, and department store chains.
As a Revenue Auditor 2 In-training (In-training level is at Revenue Auditor 1):
Bachelor degree with major study in accounting
Bachelor degree in business administration or closely allied field which includes 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college-level accounting (may include credits from one (1) Business Law class)
Bachelor or Graduate degree and is CPA Exam eligible.
As a Revenue Auditor 2 level:
Bachelor degree with major study in accounting.
Bachelor degree in business administration or closely allied field which includes 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college-level accounting.
Bachelor or Graduate degree and is CPA Exam eligible.
Two (2) years of experience as a Revenue Auditor including one (1) year as a Revenue Auditor 1.
Three (3) years of professional accounting, tax compliance or tax examination experience.
At the RA 1 level
$3,369-$4418 per month (Range 48), depending on qualifications. *Salary is reflective of appointment guidelines set for Department of Revenue. Out-of-State Revenue Auditor in-training positions receive assignment pay (included in amount stated above). After successful completion of the in-training plan you will advance to the Revenue Auditor 2 level.
At the RA 2 level
$4,208-$5,522 per month (Range 57), depending on qualifications. *Salary is adjusted to reflect appointment guidelines set for Department of Revenue. Out-of-State Revenue Auditor 2 positions receive assignment pay (included in amount stated above).
*Out-of-State Auditors generally work out of their home and receive a monthly special allowance intended to cover office costs. *

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Department of Revenue and the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA) which contains a "union security" provision.
