Washington State On-Call American Sign Language Interpreter in United States


Position Responsibilities:

The On-Call ASL Interpreter provides backfill interpreting in the educational environment for deaf or hard of hearing students at the Washington School for the Deaf campus and at other schools in the local area as needed. This position provides interpreting services to deaf and hard of hearing staff members, students, community members and/or parents at the WSD campus for trainings, meetings and other events. This is a full-time school-year based position requiring flexibility in working with a variety of people from young children to adults in addition to flexibility in regards to assignments. This position is responsible for scheduling and coordinating interpreting services for the agency.


Interpret in K-12 mainstream settings for students who are deaf and hard of hearing

Interpret meetings and trainings for adults and/or students at the Washington School for the Deaf

Professional delivery of interpreting services including reporting to assignments on time and adhering to the interpreters’ code of ethics and standards of practice.


Two year degree Certification (EIPA minimum 4.0 or NAD 4 or 5, RID NIC or CI or CT or CSC)

Ability to interpret fluently between American Sign Language and spoken English

Two years experience interpreting in an educational setting Must have good organizational skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

Must be willing and able to transport students in a state vehicle to mainstream educational programs

Demonstrated computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office programs (i.e. excel, outlook)

Supplemental Information

On-call position provide backfill for permanent employees. No guarentee of working hours.

The candidate selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to transport students to mainstream educational programs.
