County of El Dorado DEPUTY CHIEF PROBATION OFFICER in United States


The County of El Dorado is conducting this recruitment to fill one (1) full time vacancy in the Probation Department located in either Shingle Springs or South Lake Tahoe, CA. It will also establish a list which may be used for up to three months to fill future full-time, part-time, and extra-help vacancies in Shingle Springs and South Lake Tahoe.

DEFINITION Under direction, plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, reviews and evaluates designated programs, functions and activities within the County's Probation Department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This class has responsibility for assisting the Chief Probation Officer in managing the staff and activities for an assigned division of the Probation Department. The incumbent is responsible for formulating policy, developing goals and objectives, supervising staff, administering the division budget, and directing day-to–day activities. This class is distinguished from the Chief Probation Officer in that the latter has overall management and administrative responsibility for all County probation and juvenile institutional functions, staff and activities.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Assists in developing and directing the implementation of goals, objectives, work standards and departmental policies and procedures; develops and monitors the annual budget for the assigned division.
  • Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating and directing, through subordinate supervisors, all probation and/or juvenile institutional functions for the County.
  • Directs the selection, supervision and work evaluation of division staff and provides for their training and development; schedules staff and assigns work.
  • Coordinates and monitors assigned divisions and/or represents the Department by serving on various committees and boards; serves as liaison with other departments, governmental agencies and community groups.
  • Receives, investigates and resolves internal and external complaints pertaining to probation matters.
  • Participates in the development of management systems, procedures and standards for program evaluation; develops, implements and administers general and special programs relating to probation matters or juvenile care and institution: ensures compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Participates in the development of programs targeted toward the rehabilitation of juveniles, family maintenance, and family reunification.
  • Reviews daily records and reports for completeness, accuracy and compliance with policies and procedures; interprets and implements federal, state and local laws, regulations, policies and procedures and provides technical advice to staff regarding these matters; identifies and resolves problems or discrepancies.
  • Researches, prepares coordinates or directs the preparation of a variety of studies, reports or presentations for County management and other agencies.
  • Coordinates Probation and Juvenile Institutional activities with those of other divisions, County departments and public and private agencies; consults and confers with physicians, teachers, law enforcement personnel and others regarding juvenile cases.
  • Conducts studies and reports on anticipated needs for new and expanded probation/juvenile facilities and the efficient utilization of existing facilities; develops space utilization plans and plans for future staff increases.
  • Acts for the Chief Probation Officer as directed.
  • Attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.

Where college degrees and/or college course credits are required, degrees and college units must be obtained from an accredited college or university. Courses from non-accredited institutions will not be evaluated for this requirement.

Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in psychology, sociology, a behavioral science, public administration or a closely related field AND three years of supervisory or management experience in juvenile institution or adult or juvenile probation at a level equivalent to the County's class of Supervising Deputy Probation Officer-Institutions or Supervising Deputy Probation Officer.

NOTE: The above qualifications are a typically accepted way of obtaining the required knowledge and skills.

Other Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess appropriate Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) requirements and Penal Code Section 832 certification. Must meet and maintain standards for peace officers as specified in the California Government Code Section 1031.
