Actuarial Co-ops can expect to build computer skills, learn insurance concepts and gain an understanding of product features and contracts. You’ll gain an understanding of the insurance business in general, while learning to leverage technology based tools to perform analysis and solve problems.
Co-op opportunities are available for qualified students interested in pursuing a career as an Actuary and who have or plan to sit for SOA exams. Positions are primarily located in our U.S. Headquarters inWellesley, MA, with the possibility of our Windsor, CT office as well.
Co-op positions are full time, run in two cycles, and have the following application time frames for the semester(s) prior to the cycle:
January to June cycle - apply between August and October
July to December cycle - apply between December and March
Below are some examples of projects Co-ops have worked on in the past. Note that projects will vary based on business needs; thus this list should not be regarded as exhaustive:
Co-op students have worked in business units to perform valuation experience studies using Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Access). This allowed the student to learn/improve/expand their technical skills. As part of these projects, the students were also able to develop their soft skills by assisting in writing the experience study reports and communicating results to management.
Co-op students have also worked on a variety of projects including model conversion/development and monthly production responsibilities in our asset-liability management department. These projects provided a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with various asset classes, their features, and modeling. In addition, the co-ops were introduced to a wide group of people from Investment, Treasury, Finance, Actuarial, etc.
Co-op students have worked in the Group Pricing area integrating newly acquired blocks of business into our processes, transitioning our report structure to utilize SAS, and identifying and implementing workflow improvements. Students in these roles have been exposed to personnel from different areas of the company including Sales, Underwriting, Marketing, and other Actuaries.
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or a related area with a targeted graduation date ranging from May 2018 to December 2018
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.00
Demonstrated interest in actuarial profession
Prior actuarial internship experience preferred
One or more exams preferred
Ability to translate complex, abstract concepts and theory
Analytical, problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency with Excel
Programming skills preferred
