The Idaho Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for a Chemist, Principal with an inquisitive mind, the desire to grow as a Chemist and to cross-train in a wide range of analyses including organic and inorganic. Our lab is nationally known for its expertise and testing to ensure quality and safety of feed, fertilizer, and soil amendments.

Job Summary

To perform complex chemical analysis and research and provide consultative services; perform related work including development of new methods and procedures, and are considered the technical expert, having direction and primary accountability and technical supervision for a specialty field or primary certification program. They provide primary consultation and technical assistance to other laboratories, professional clients, and department users. They work with carcinogenic substances and toxic, volatile, and corrosive chemicals and perform method development and method validation of procedures. Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for day-to-day Feed and Fertilizer Lab operations.

  • Communication with supervisor for all administrative purposes, including the daily and weekly update of operations, workload, and purchases.

  • Supervise all lab staff on all procedures and assure all work is in compliance with state regulations and laws.

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis on Feed, Fertilizer, and Compost samples.

  • Review all lab expenses and recommend lab equipment updates and maintenance and research potential equipment purchases.

  • Prepare performance reviews.

  • Facilitate training for all lab staff in the lab standard operating procedures.

  • Maintain all standard operation procedures (SOP) manuals, standard methods (SM), and quality control documents.

  • Develop and maintain all bench-sheets and regularly used forms for quality system practices compliance.

  • Development methods for new extraction procedures, as well as method development for better efficiency in all current procedures.

  • Final Feed and Fertilizer technical review/signature of all quality control documents (Bench-sheets, SOPs, SM, etc) and certificates of analysis.

  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of all general and sophisticated lab equipment and instrumentation.

  • Responsible for communication with outside clients (manufacturers, sampling locations, inspectors, and customers).

  • Provide technical expertise and laboratory services for other public and private entities.

Minimum Qualifications These requirements are mandatory requirements.

  • Completion of the core requirements of a bachelors’ degree in chemistry from an accredited college, and approximately five years’ work experience in a certified laboratory, doing complex chemical analyses

OR

  • Completion of the core requirements of a Master’s of Science degree in chemistry from an accredited college, and approximately three years’ work experience in a certified laboratory, doing complex chemical analysis.

Desirable Qualifications These are not required, but may increase your score.

  • Good knowledge of supervision

  • Experience creating Microsoft Excel Formulation and management of formula rich documents
