This is a permanent, full-time, Physician Assistant position with the Yakama Indian Health Service Unit located in Toppenish, Washington; As a Physician Assistant works under Physicians with specialty in Family Practice, you will provide comprehensive; diagnostic and therapeutic medical care and services to patients and family members in clinics, homes, and schools on Indian Reservations or in other Indian Health Service facilities. This position reports to the Clinical Director.

GS-11 $69,081- $84,624

GS-12 $78,661- $97,291


Works collaboratively with physicians in patient evaluation, management, and revision of therapeutic plans including the duties listed below:

  • Provide the full range of care by interviewing, examining, diagnosing and treating patients in primary care medicine (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics).
  • Provide emergency care as needed to stabilize patient and arrange for transfer of care to an appropriate facility for the level of care needed.
  • Maintain patient records in the electronic health record system.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): All applicants must meet the following basic requirements for all grade levels:

  • Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education.
  • Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.

Education and Experience Requirements: Applicants who meet the above basic requirements may qualify for the following grade levels if they meet the additional educational and/or specialized experience requirements described below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-11 (or equivalent): Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements qualify for positions at this grade level:

  • A minimum of 1 full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant equivalent to the GS-09 grade level and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program as described above; or
  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a related health field and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program. Examples of related doctoral degree programs include, but are not limited to, public health; allied health field; public health education; or other related health science.

GS - 12 and above (or equivalent): A minimum of 1 full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant equivalent to the next lower grade level and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program is required.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
