This position is located at the Yakama Health Center in Toppenish, WA. The purpose of the position is to serve as a clinical specialist in pediatric dentistry and provide pediatric dental services to the designated population in accordance with IHS policies. This position meets the criteria specified in pillar number one of the five pillars of the PHS Commissioned Corps. - Provides preventive services and fluoridation activities both clinic-based and community-based; diagnostic services through the use of history, radiographs, clinical examination, diagnostic models, and other appropriate tests.
- Provides pediatric dental services using local anesthetic, nitrous oxide, sedative medications or combinations.
- Provides both routine and complex restorative services; emergency services including the treatment of trauma, pain and infection.
- The incumbent will obtain consultative services in medicine and other specialty areas that require a multidisciplinary approach.

- Provide continuing education to IHS dentists at an Area level/ National level. Minimal, under 10% travel.
- Relocation expenses are authorized and will be paid. You will be required to sign a one year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school.
Licensure: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
Additional Requirements for Grade GS-12 and above: For purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined.
- Approved internship; approved residency-Training in a hospital dental internship or residency approved by the council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
- Graduate-level study -- Either dental graduate study leading to an advanced degree such as Master of Science, or postgraduate (nondegree) dental school study involving a level of instruction comparable to that provided in a graduated degree program.
- National certifying board -- An examining board in a special area of dental practice recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
- Board eligibility -- Qualification for examination by a national certifying board as a result of having met the advanced training program requirements for a dental specialty.
Experience and/or training must be one of the following types:
- Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry.
- Approved internship training.
- Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school.
- Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice.
- Other advanced study or training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility.
For specialist positions, experience and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist.
GS-13: Three years of professional dentistry experience and/ or training equivalent to at least that of a Board eligible.
Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.
Condition of Employment- Applicants can be accepted form students who expect to complete qualifying education within 6 months from date of application. However education must be completed successfully before the applicant can be appointed. Applications can be accepted from students who successfully completed qualifying education who expect to complete licensure requirements within 6 months.
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
