General Motors Materials Engineer/Metallurgist - MAN0020695 in Toledo, Ohio

Responsible for:

- Developing processes, procedures and standardized work for the operation of the metallurgy lab

- Testing material properties of heat treated parts to ensure part print compliance

- Assisting in the development and maintenance of recipes for the low pressure vacuum carburizing of various gears

- Resolving all materials-related issues

- Work may involve providing technical direction to and coordination of 3rdparty technicians operating metallurgy lab

- Involvement and support in heat treating, shot peening, annealing and weld joint processes- Recommending materials and processes

- Providing or reviewing materials-related content of BOM and SOR

- Providing material specifications

- Reviewing and approving engineering drawings

- Coordinating input from internal/external customers to better understand customer needs

- High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult

- Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals

Basic Required

- (3) plus years’ commitment to the project

- (5) plus years’ experience as a Metallurgist

- Thorough knowledge of material standards - GM, SAE, ASTM, etc.

- Familiarity with common transmission materials, prime forming processes, heat treat, and other metallurgical and chemical processes

- Strong analytical skills - for data analysis, design of experiments, failure analysis, and problem-solving

- Excellent communication skills both oral and written

- High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

- Materials Laboratory experience

- Familiarity with transmission and gear operations

- Manufacturing experience

Basic Preferred

- Master’s degree in engineering preferred

- (8) Years’ experience within heat treat, shot peen and/or welding processes

- Previous supervisory experience


- College degree with major in Metallurgy or equivalent training/experience
