The primary purpose of these positions is to independently accomplish simple planning, layout, fabrication, modification, repair, assembly and installation of aircraft sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies using blueprints, sketches, drawings, and job specifications. Using various hand tools and power tools/machines in the performance of duties, such as, rivet guns, punches, hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seaming equipment, bar folders, brakes, stakes, slip-roll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with extra forming rolls, crimpers, beading machines, etc. Work is performed on day, swing, and/or graveyard shifts or perform the full range of aircraft painting, including surface preparation, blending and matching paints, and coating of various surfaces requiring fine finishes and decorative effects; Setting up, adjusting and operating spray-painting equipment or other power painting equipment.

At the WG-08 and WG-10 Levels:

  1. Ability to do the work of Sheet Metal Mechanic (AIRCRAFT) without more than normal supervision. (THIS IS A SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT) Screen-out elements are the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance.

  2. Ability to read and interpret instructions, work specifications, blueprint, etc.

  3. Skill in layout and pattern development, including geometric projection and triangulation.

  4. Ability to use hand tools and power tools/machines for sheet metal work.

  5. Ability to assemble, disassemble, fabricate, and repair aircraft sheet metal systems, components, parts and items.

At the WG-08 Level Only: Possession of an Airframe AND Powerplant (A&P;) License is considered minimally qualifying. Note: You must submit a copy of both FRONT AND BACK of your A&P; license with your application for eligibility consideration. Your license must state both Airframe and Powerplant to be considered minimally eligible.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours worked per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier items. Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools. Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 pounds.

Working Environment: Works both inside and outside and is subjected to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines and to a variety of weather conditions. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Employee is required to wear safety glasses when performing eye hazardous operations. REQUIRED as needed, the incumbent must be able to work in confined spaces without issue.
