POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs specimen processing procedures, serves as a Team Leader for Phlebotomy staff, assists with Micro set-ups and performs laboratory testing within scope of licensure. The position requires exercise of independent judgment under minimum or moderate degree of supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Performs specimen processing procedures on all in-house and reference testing specimens while ensuring proper labeling and specimen type and integrity. * Serves as Phlebotomy Team Leader by coordinating activities of Phlebotomy Team and assisting with training of new hires. * Accurately performs in-scope quality control and laboratory testing within specified turn-around-time requirements. * Manages supplies by checking inventory and expiration dates, ordering and stocking. * Maintains knowledge of Nursing Order Entry system to assist with test ordering questions. * Communicates technical and procedural problems to Technical Supervisor, Manager, Director, Emergency Department and House Supervisor as needed. * Answers phone and assists customers in a courteous and professional manner at all times. * Performs all required documentation. * Maintains a clean and organized work space. * Performs clerical duties as needed. * Assists with phlebotomy scheduling as needed. * Fosters teamwork through participation in department activities and committees. * Carefully reviews and signs policies/procedures within specified time limits. * Actively seeks to improve knowledge, skills and abilities. * Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care or the services delivered. * Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care which results in patient harm. * Maintains confidentiality of all Protected Health Information. * Follows established policies and procedures and fulfills regulatory requirements at all times. * Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements. * Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety. * Regular, Punctual and dependable attendance. * Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED: * Successful completion of Medical Laboratory Technician training program or military equivalent preferred LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: * National Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Technician certificationrequired * National Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) certification preferred * State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Technician license preferred EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: * Three (3) years’ experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital settingrequired * Two (2) years’ experience in specimen processing/specimen referralsrequired * One (1) year’ experience as shift supervisor/team leader preferred * Two (2) years’ experience as Medical Laboratory Technician or military equivalent preferred An EEO/AA Employer M/F/V/D.
