General Dynamics Information Technology Research Biologist (WRAIR - Drug Metabolism & Disposition) in Silver Spring, Maryland

Job Description

GDIT is seeking a Research Biologist (Drug Metabolism & Disposition) to support the mission of the Experimental Therapeutics (ET) Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The mission of the WRAIR Branch of Experimental Therapeutics is to discover and develop new pharmaceutical agents to protect military members from death, disease, and injury. The ET Branch is organized into three distinct departments which contribute to the different phases leading to FDA drug approval. The three comprising departments are the Departments of Drug Discovery, Drug Development, and Clinical Pharmacology.

This position is in direct support of the Department of Drug Development. Specific tasks include:

  • Provide in vitro metabolism and disposition experimental support to include the design and implementation of high-throughput cell-based assays in efforts related to discovery and development of new antiparasitic drugs.

  • Design, maintain, and implement in vitro permeability studies utilizing high throughput robotic systems and appropriate cell lines to assess permeability and potential for drug metabolism.

  • Design and implement standard or novel procedures for assessing in vitro drug metabolism using recombinant enzymes and tissue fractions that include recombinant Cytochrome P450s, liver microsomes, primary hepatocyctes, and additional enzyme-based assays to assess drug metabolism.

  • Implement analytical methods for candidate drugs and metabolites using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, in support of metabolic profiling and preclinical drug pharmacokinetic studies.

  • Train junior lab members in the procedures required for cell culture and assay performance as required.

  • Collaborate in the development and validation of analytical methods for the identification of candidate new drugs and putative metabolites using HPLC with UV/VIS, fluorescence, electrochemical detection, radioactive monitor analyses, and/or mass spectrometry as needed.

  • Analyze data and prepare reports in support of Investigational New Drugs and New Drug Applications through the FDA using standardized computer applications and relevant software.

  • Generate and maintain detailed laboratory records and related summaries and reports, all of which remain property of the WRAIR.

  • Prepare and present novel research projects as abstracts and/or for submission for the peer review publication process.

  • Comply with all specified guidelines regarding safety, security, standard operating procedures, written protocols, technical manuals, and procurement of supplies/equipment as per WRAIR regulations.

Knowledge Base : Knowledge of drug metabolism and disposition studies and in the in handling and maintaining cells culture using sterile techniques and conducting in vitro metabolism-related experiments to include the design and implementation of high throughput assays for the in vitro assessment of permeability studies using laboratory robotics. Skills in the design and implementation of relevant experiments as evidenced by a record of peer reviewed publications. Knowledge of the design and implementation of assays to answer directed metabolic questions using multiple cell lines (e.g. Primary Human Hepatocytes, MDCK, and Cac02).
