The position is located in the Ambulatory Care Branch, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, NM. Perform a variety of responsible nursing care procedures requiring professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments. Reports directly to Supervisory Clinical Nurse (Ambulatory).

  • Perform professional nursing duties for the care of inpatient (ambulatory care outpatients, emergency cases, and patients in specialty clinics).
  • Interview patients and family members and consults with attending Physicians, other staff members to determine and evaluate the kind of health care needed.
  • Carry out treatments and other procedures required; administer medications; observe and document patient's condition, changes, and reactions to medications, and medical treatment.
  • Provide counseling and teaching to patients and families or surrogates on preventive curative and rehabilitative measures involved in health care.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of care, Quality Assurance and Infection Control activities.

LICENSE: Applicants will be required to verify they possess a current, valid, unrestricted license in any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.

  1. Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Must provide official Nursing transcripts.

  2. An active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.


GS-09: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's degree OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level.

EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. For example, specialized experience in identifying disease entities in order to recognize complications and therapeutic interventions required; in pharmaceuticals in order to recognize there desired effects, side effects and complications of their use; recognize adverse signs and symptoms which are not always apparent and to react promptly in emergency situations including the implementation of life saving procedures.

Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
