The Sheridan VA Healthcare System (located in Sheridan, Wyoming) is recruiting for a Medical Technologist. You can come to the historic west, SHERIDAN, WYOMING. Duties

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES*:*

The incumbent serves as the Senior Staff Specialist in the Hematology Section of the laboratory. Incumbent is responsible for attending training for complex analytical instrument and training co-workers in its operation. Perform complex maintenance procedures and is consulted as the ‘in-house" expert for troubleshooting problems on all analytical instruments in the Hematology Section. Incumbent is responsible for updating the procedure manuals in the Hematology Section, recommending updated guidelines and policies for non-routine or complex tasks to the Supervisory Medical Technologist or Medical Director.

The incumbent serves as a multi-modality Medical Technologist at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Incumbent is responsible for coverage of all clinical disciplines including Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, HgbA1c, and Microbiology. Incumbent is required to cover rotational call shifts as assigned to provide 24 hour, 7 day a week clinical laboratory service. On-call responsibilities cover non administrative times, including weekday nights and 24 hours per day on weekends and holidays, as the sole medical technologist on-site.

In addition to these broad generalist duties, the incumbent is also responsible for the technical oversight of the entire laboratory on late shift and weekends, including Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Urinalysis and Microbiology, consisting of multiple instruments. The Incumbent is responsible for performing established daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on all major and backup analyzers. Responsible for producing policy and procedure manuals, updating procedures, adherence to all current accreditation standards, all inventory and ordering duties, quality control program oversight, including corrective action as necessary, new method development calibrations and linearity and calibration verifications as directed by the lead tech or his designee. This technologist acts as an expert and technical advisor for all laboratory departments during the late shift and weekends.

The incumbent serves as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for more difficult, complex, or unique tests requiring special knowledge. Advise all organizational levels on various aspects of specialized testing, including appropriateness that takes into consideration clinical context. The technical specialist works independently and is given freedom of action under the general guidance of a pathologist or the laboratory supervisor. At this facility the pathologists are contracted and do not directly supervise the medical technologists.

Work Schedule:Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, plus rotation to provide On-Call Lab Services (No blood banking, No Emergency room and No ICU) (with premium pay) on nights, weekends and holidays to provide 24/7 lab services.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bio analysts (AAB).

Preferred Experience:

  1. Recent experience in Hematology at a hospital setting.

  2. Experience in a leadership role such as key operator for instrumentation, quality assurance, accreditation.

  3. Experience in working independently, unsupervised, i.e. call back, weekend or shift work with no other backup staff.

  4. Good phlebotomy skills.

  5. Knowledge of accreditation requirements.

GS-9: Minimum Requirements:Appointment or promotion to the GS-9 level requires a bachelor's degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science or in a related science and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Both the education and the clinical practice program must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree. In addition, candidates for GS-9 must possess one of the below: (1) Experience. Completion of 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. (2) Education: Must have 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in medical technology or directly related field, or equivalent graduate degree provided the applicant's total background demonstrates the core competencies for GS-9 level assignment.

GS-10: Minimum Requirements:Appointment or promotion to the GS-10 level requires a bachelor's degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science or in a related science and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Both the education and the clinical practice program must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
