Under general guidance, the Sr. Editor, Competitor Running is responsible for conceptualizing, writing, assigning and editing various types of content for Competitor magazine and Competitor.com. He or she participates in general content planning for the magazine and website and offers ideas and story topics on features, profiles, gear and tech, training, nutrition, lifestyle trends, as well as news. Provides on-site reporting for the magazine and travels to events as necessary. This position reports to the Editor-in-Chief, Competitor Magazine.

Responsibilities:

  • Possesses exceptional knowledge of the running culture as well as health and fitness within the domain of running and endurance sports

  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance

  • Demonstrates attention to detail

  • Writes articles, columns, news, blogs

  • Copyedits, line edits content

  • Assists in assigning stories to freelancers

  • Assists in collecting photos

  • Works closely with other editors on editorial planning

  • Consults on product and industry trends

  • Interacts with sales team and other upper-level management in a professional, helpful manner

  • Represents CGI at races, events and industry trade shows

  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency on time-sensitive projects and issues; meeting deadlines

  • Creates crossover content for print publications and websites

  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Education: Bachelor or advanced degree in journalism or related field or equivalent work experience.

  • Experience level: minimum five years in an editorial position or equivalent.

  • Must have exceptional knowledge of gear, training, trends and technology within the domain of running and endurance sports.

  • Skills: Working knowledge of grammar, punctuation, AP style and spelling.

  • Computer skills for editing and writing; knowledge of computer software programs, such as Microsoft Word.

  • Experience working in PC and Mac environment.

  • Knowledge of websites and content interaction between websites and print publications.

  • Ability to travel and work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends.

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.

  • Excellent communication skills both in written and oral.

  • Ability to multi-task and meet critical project deadlines.
