Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Indian Health Services (IHS), Northern Plains Region, Great Plains Area, HIM Department, Rosebud*, South Dakota. * Position reports to the Supervisory Health System Specialist.

  • Assists in developing performance improvement (PI) monitors that are problematic and/or non compliance areas of the HIM Department.
  • Provides ongoing orientation and training on medico legal issues including confidentiality. Follows up on Privacy Act/HIPAA and/or any other complaints or problems and keeps Area Privacy Coordinator informed.
  • Quantitative Analysis, an accurate count and statistically supported in the following categories: nature, name, ot other classification following a consistent pattern.
  • Qualitative Analysis, a review to assure the presence of all component parts of the records, including identification and validation of each part, by name, all reports which appear to be indicated by nature of the case.

Certification of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).


GS-11: At Least One (1) year of Specialized Experience Equivalent to at least the GS-09 Grade Level in The Federal Service Performing Work that Equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully Perform the duties of this position as described in the vacancy announcement.

GS-12: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level.

Specialized Experience: Knowledge and Experience in analyzing medical records to insure compliance with accreditation standards. Experience with Electronic Health Records Systems and Maintaining the Records. Knowledge in training and compliance for Privacy Act of 1974, FOIA ( Freedom of Information Act) and HIPPA ( Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Experience with Identifying and analyzing electronic data to improve department and organization performance. Analyzing the consistencies of Medical Records to insure compliance with IHCIA ( Indian Health Care Improvement Act).

Work Schedule: 40 Hours Per Week, With Position on Call for the Service Unit

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
