To provide comprehensive nutrition care and education to patients and the health care team in specialized disease states/areas of medicine. Does so in a manner which is highly responsive to patients’ needs and promotes and supports the highest quality nutritional care.
Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment:
Functions with a minimum of supervision making frequent decisions requiring a high degree of judgment based on clinical knowledge. Patients may include infants, children, adolescents, adults or geriatric populations, as assigned.
Assesses nutritional status of patients on complicated medical nutritional regimes designed for a disease entity or area of practice.
Assesses and recommends complicated medical nutritional regimes to the physician to match individual patient requirements and limitations; assures adequacy and appropriateness of regimes and conducts ongoing evaluation of nutritional status of patients and of the care being provided.
Provides ongoing education on medical nutritional therapy and food-drug interactions to patients, families and significant others. Develops educational materials and evaluation tools to be utilized in specialty areas.
Documents all aspects of nutritional care in medical records or in letters to physicians for private referrals.
Acts as a consultant to physicians, nurses and other health care team members in providing nutrition therapy to patients. Functions as an integral member of the health care team including Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Social Workers and other therapists. Provides in-service education and information on new developments to Residents, staff Physicians, Nurses and Pharmacists.
Precepts and provides formal training to dietetic students and staff members; orients new professional and technical staff; coordinates the provision of a comprehensive didactic and practical curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students working with University faculty to administer this program.
Designs and implements nutrition program(s) for area of practice.
Serves as liaison between Food & Nutrition Services and specialized areas. Represents the department on hospital committees; participates in community nutrition activities and continuing education programs.
B.S. degree in Nutrition, Food & Nutrition or equivalent and 2 years clinical nutrition experience in health care setting; registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency of the American Dietetic Association. Master’s degree in related field preferred.
