Parham Doctors’ Hospital, a campus of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, is located in the west end of Richmond. Parham Doctors’ Hospital is a 200-bed facility offering medical and surgical programs including orthopedics, behavioral health, bariatrics, imaging, rehabilitation services, 24-hour emergency care, sleep disorder, podiatry, primary care, and occupational health. The Parham Doctors’ Hospital campus is home to The Orthopedic Hospital, one of the most honored joint and spine programs in the state.

The Surgical First Assistant (SFA) will perform care under the direction of the unit Nursing Leadership Team and the Director. The Surgical First Assistant:

  • Utilizes principles of aseptic technique in creating and maintaining a sterile field.

  • Plans and provides equipment and supplies based on patient and physician needs.

  • Demonstrates competency in assisting surgeon as it relate to unit scope if care.

  • Promotes cost containment while delivering quality patient care within the operating room.

  • Participates in on-call assignments and demonstrates flexibility to cover staffing as needed.

  • Demonstrates flexibility to perform other functions within Surgical Services to assist in the smooth operation of the department.

  • Provides a safe environment for the surgical patient during their perioperative experience.

  • Serves as a professional member of the OR team.

  • Pursues own professional growth through continuing education and inservices.

  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures; supports the mission of the hospital.

  • Exercises sound judgment and decision making skills on behalf of patient, self and peers.

    Patient Rights - The Surgical Assistant will work to support and protect the rights of each patient served, treat each patient with dignity and care, and maintain patient confidentiality/privacy.

    Patient Safety – The Surgical Assistant demonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient falls, medication safety, National Patient Safety Goals, critical value reporting, and administration of blood products.

    EXPERIENCE Required – CORT having successfully completed an approved Surgical Assisting Program. CPR certification maintained. Documentation of continuing education units required for CORT recertification and experience. Maintain clinical status. Preferred – SA with a minimum of 4 years experience in all areas of surgery.

    EDUCATION Required – Minimum of three years operation room scrubbing experience. Preferred - Minimum of two years as a surgical assistant; Currently enrolled in an accredited RN program
