The Research Associate will develop innovative and breakthrough latex technologies for architectural coatings. The incumbent will work in a synthesis laboratory under the supervision of the architectural team leader. The research associate will plan, conduct and direct core research and test drills for the development of new and innovative architectural coating technologies leading to successful commercial launches against aggressive timeline. Responsibilities include leading one or more projects and identifying new technology opportunities through literature searches, competitive analysis and intellectual property review.
Drive technical strategy and innovation for architectural coatings by developing and testing new ideas.
Develop and test new ideas directed at improving coatings properties to add value through improved performance, ability to meet regulatory requirements, reduced cost or improved efficiency in manufacturing or application.
Network with other scientists and engineers across R&D and manufacturing to develop products which can transition quickly from the lab to commercial scale. Drive technology transfer from research organization.
Interact with product management and marketing to propose new projects targeted at traditional architectural coatings markets and at adjacent markets to provide growth opportunities for the business. Interact frequently with plant labs to provide guidance and support technology transfer.
Maintain a clear and up to date understanding of the technical literature and the competitive intellectual property.
Direct the lab activities of at least one technician or technologist, and broadly support the training and development of employees and contract staff when needed.
Develop and maintain intellectual property assets; develop sound research project proposals leading to the successful launch of approved projects.
Experience and Education A PhD degree in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Coatings Science and at least 10 years of experience in latex synthesis is required. A deep understanding and demonstration of development of novel latex technology is required. Experience in architectural latex design is highly desired.
