Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

Position Details: One (1) permanent full-time, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Department located at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona. Reports to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse.

Salary range: GS-11, $69,081 - $84,624 (annually) Is position covered by PL 101-630? Yes, (see item #2 in the Required Documents Tab)

Position assumes 50% clinical nursing functions, 40% clinical coach responsibilities and 10% supervisory/management functions in the Intensive Care unit (ICU).



Functions independently to utilize professional nursing principles and procedures and extensive clinical experience serving as a clinical coach preceptor ensures adequate preparation to function independently and to facilitate their transition to Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Responsible for directing, coordinating, providing leadership and evaluating the provision of nursing care within a professional practice model specializing in ICU.

Maintains professional knowledge and competency in nursing and models the agency philosophy of customer service, medical home, and family centered care during performance of nursing functions .

Assesses learning and training needs of multi-level nursing staff for ICU, utilizing variety of survey tools and studies from which recommendations for in-service education, specialized training, individualized training, and new and improved training programs can be implemented.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Licensure: All applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of United States.

For GS-11: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education OR 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks:

Example of specialized experience: serves as a clinical coach preceptor ensurs nursing staff new to the specialty receive adequate prepration to fucntion independently and facilitate their transition to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Management of clinical nursing personnel and the management of resources of nursing services to implement patient care concepts. Analyzing and reviewing patient flow. Evaluates and implements recommendations with the nursing leaders and other hospital leaders. Conducting studies of various medical services to ensure conformity to National Standards of Care.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Must provide copy of certification in and competency in the critical care area and requires the Acute/Critical Care Nursing certification (CCRN).
