Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. This vacancy is being filled through the Office of Personnel Management's delegated Direct Hire Authority. The following is applicable: all applicants who meet the basic qualification requirements will be made available to the Selecting Official for consideration. Hiring preference will be given to qualified Native American and Alaska Native applicants, but Veterans' preference and traditional rating and ranking of applications do not apply to these vacancies.

Position Details: May be Permanent, Temporary, or Term with a tour of duty of Full-Time, Part-Time or Intermittent. The Agency has the option of extending Term Appointments for up to a maximum of four years.

This position requires that you obtain and maintain clinical privileges. If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee may be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from the Federal service.


Major Duties:

Performs professional nursing care responsible in the following areas Outpatient Clinic, Surgical department, Adult Care Unit Pedicatric, Intensive Care Unit, Procedure Room, Obstetrical unit, Emergency department and/or Oncology Program.

Assess acute and chronic conditions including physical, psychosocial, home health, and eduction needs as it pertains to patients.

Observe and assess patient conditions, recognize, identify and interpret serious situations.

Administer therapeutic measures such as medications, intravenous fluids, blood transfutions, nasogastric tubes, oncology medications, central lines, ventilators, fetal monitors, arterial lines, etc.

Operates and monitors specialized equipment.

Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency continuing education.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector.

GS-10 Grade Level:

  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level.

At GS-09 and above, positions require 1 year of specialized experience in the specific specialty area of nursing that is being filled. Example of Specialized Experience performs professional nursing care to assess acute and chronic conditions, recognize, identify and interpret serious situations, administer therapeutic measures such as medication, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, nasogastric tubes, oncology medication, central lines, ventilators, fetal monitors, arterial lines, etc.

Note: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions which both education and experience are acceptable. Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
