The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.
The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. This is an Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) and allows acceptance of applications with eligible applicants referred for consideration. This vacancy is being filled through the Office of Personnel Management's delegated Direct Hire Authority. The following is applicable: all applicants who meet the basic qualification requirements will be made available to the Selecting Official for consideration. Hiring preference will be given to qualified Native American and Alaska Native applicants, but Veterans' preference and traditional rating and ranking of applications do not apply to these vacancies.

Period of Eligibility: Applications will remain eligible for three (3) months from the time the application is received.
Who May Be Considered: US Citizens, current and former Competitive Service Federal employees, Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and eligible Indian Preference candidates.
Position Details: Permanent, Temporary, or Term with tour of duty of Full-Time, Part-Time or Intermittent. The Agency has the option of extending Term Appointments for up to a maximum of four years.
Salary Range: GS-11 - $69,081 - $84,624 (annually)GS-12 - $80,731 - $99,361 (annually)
GS-13 - $88,618 - $110,776 (annually)
This position requires that you obtain and maintain clinical privileges. If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee may be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from the Federal service.
Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, and injuries.
Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage and frequencies.
Counsel patients about drug regimen and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and herbal remedies.
Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
Involves the knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological methods; and assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

Education: Degree from a professional Nurse Practitioner program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States as required by the Indian Health Service Policy on Licensure of Health Care Providers.
Selective Placement Factor: Must provide a copy of active certification from one of the specialty listed (in Adult, Gerontology, Adult-Gerontology, Pediatric, Family, Psychiatric Mental Health, and Emergency) as a Nurse Practitioner issued by an appropriate certifying body, such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
For GS-11: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from a professional Nurse Practitioner program OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education OR 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level.
For GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience as Nurse Practitioner equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level.
For GS-13: 1 year of specialized experience as Nurse Practitioner equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level.
Note: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions which both education and experience are acceptable.
Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
