Serve as a Certified Medical Assistant for the Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC) Pediatric Clinic located in Phoenix, AZ. There are multiple positions to be filled. The incumbent(s) will report to the Clinic Practice Manager of the Pediatric Clinic onsite and will provide a variety of patient care and technical tasks in support of the PIMC Pediatric Clinic.

The positions could be filled at any level from the GS-4 grade to GS-7. Candidates chosen at grades below GS-7 will have promotion potential up to the GS-7 grade. The incumbent(s) may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

Duties

Serve as a Certified Medical Assistant for the PIMC Pediatric Clinic -

  • Work with providers and other health care team members to provide age-appropriate, comprehensive, clinical, technical, and administrative/support health care services
  • Provide pre-treatment, treatment, and post-treatment evaluation of patients to include patient screening, evaluation of vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, and other intake and clinical assessment procedures
  • Utilize diagnostic tools such as a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, peak flow meter, glucometer, etc., to obtain and/or validate observations
  • Participate in pre-visit planning for scheduled patients and document information/patient care on the patient's ambulatory care record and/or electronic health record
  • Coordinate clinic flow for assigned patients, monitor patient health and general well-being, and reinforce patient education
  • Assist the provider during exam of patients, with obtaining specimens, or treatment interventions
  • Administer oral medication, performs subcutaneous and intramuscular injections under direct supervision of a Physician, Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at the GS-4 level -

  • 6 months of general experience AND 6 months of specialized experience providing patient care support duties for medical or health personnel. The specialized experience should include clinical duties such as taking and recording vital signs or preparing patients for examination, typical of medical assistant or health education positions.
  • 2 full years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position such as anatomy and medical terminology.
  • A combination of education and experience listed above. 1 year of education is equivalent to 30 semester hours. Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at the GS-5 level -

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level obtained in either the public or private sector. Such experience would include determining patient assessment, distinguishing between normal and abnormal findings, and administering intervention as prescribed by the provider, typical of medical assistant or health education positions.

  • A four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
  • A combination of education and specialized experience listed above. One year of education is equivalent to 30 semester hours. Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at the GS-6 level -

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level obtained in either the public or private sector. Such experience would include venipuncture, collecting lab specimens, performing basic wound/skin care measures, and administering oral medication, typical of experienced medical assistant or health education positions. Applicants who meet at least one of the following requirements may qualify for positions at the GS-7 level -

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level obtained in either the public or private sector. Such experience would include providing complex health care to high risk patients, using specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, EKG, & IV fluid pumps, interpreting examination requests accurately and recognizing a need for additional tests, and establishing a patient care plan, typical of experienced or senior medical assistant or health technician positions.

  • One full year of graduate education in an area of study directly related to the work of this position.
  • A combination of education and specialized experience listed above. One year of graduate education is equivalent to 18 semester hours unless the school has determined otherwise. Selective Placement Factors: Applicants must meet the following Selective Placement Factors in order to be considered for this position. You must provide proof of meeting these requirements with your application packet.

  • Completion of an approved medical assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by any accrediting agency recognized by the United State Department of Education. In addition to the training requirement, you must have one of the following credentials -

  • Current and active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

  • Current and active Registered Medical Assistant certification (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Current and active National Certified Medical Assistant certification (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Completion of a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States that provided clinical proficiency with the necessary scope of knowledge to perform the duties of the position can be substituted for the Selective Placement Factors listed above
