The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

Emergency Medicine Director for the Colorado River Service Unit in Parker, AZ. Position is located in an area where specialized trauma and emergency care is provided on a 24-hour basis and approximately 11,500 patients are seen annually with the majority being urgent and emergent care patients after hours. The position will report to the Clinical Director on-site.

  • Provides emergency care on a regular and recurring basis to patients seen in the Emergency Department;
  • Makes appropriate referrals and obtains appropriate consultations as needed after primary evaluation;
  • Recognizes and gives initial treatment of acute psychiatric problems;
  • Directly supervises the emergency room physicians with performance evaluations, scheduling, and credentialing;
  • Reports to leadership on status of emergency services.

  • Relocation expenses are authorized and will be paid. You will be required to sign a one year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: All physicians must meet all three of the following basic requirements:

1. Degree - Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country.

2. Graduate Training Subsequent to Degree - 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., 1 year internship or the first year of a residency program. This graduate training must by approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the U.S. or Canada.

3. Licensure - Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the U.S.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the above, physicians must also meet the following requirement*:*

GS-15: 5 years of residency training in Emergency Medicine OR have equivalent training and work experience in Emergency Medicine (e.g., a senior specialist with 3-4 years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level.
