The goal of the Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) is to assist in the stable employment of Blind, Deaf Blind and Low Vision clients, many of whom have other disabilities in addition to visual impairment. As the Community Worker/Reader-Driver, you directly support our mission by performing reading and/or driving functions for DSB staff who have visual disabilities and any others that may need your services to facilitate their job performance.

Please Note:

  • This position is located in the Seattle Field Office and will be on-call with no regular work schedule. Availability is generally required Monday-Thursday, days and some evenings. Fridays and weekends are exceptional and work is generally scheduled in advance.
  • This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees. As a condition of employment, the candidate accepting this position must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.

Working in a variety of environments including businesses, schools, homes of customers, industrial, professional, and community events, you will be responsible for transporting staff and completing hand written documents.

Some of what you'll enjoy doing:

  • Operating and servicing a Washington State authorized vehicle used to transport blind and visually impaired staff to and from various work and field locations.
  • Completing hand written documents and observing/sharing visual information about the environment, situations, etc.
  • Accurately reading, writing, verbalizing, and comprehending written material in support of staff and customers.
  • Lifting and carrying equipment for staff using Orientation and Mobility aids, such as a long cane or dog guide. Qualifications


  • Must have a valid, unrestricted (other than corrective lenses) Driver's License and three (3) years of licensed driving experience with no more than three minor traffic infractions.
  • Ability to drive safely and defensively in all traffic conditions.
  • Ability to read and follow mapping directions.
  • Ability to read accurately and write, verbalize, comprehend, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Preferred/Desired:

  • Knowledge and experience in dealing with persons with disabilities.

  • Able to work in a variety of environments such as businesses, schools, customer homes, industrial, and professional/community events, both clean and dirty.
  • Able to observe the landscape or situation and verbalize and describe the environment with essential visual information when asked to do so. The successful candidate should also possess the following competencies:

  • The ability to process and give information at the right times.

  • Able to handle aggressive customers, family members, employers, and others by remaining calm and acting appropriately.
  • Able to defer all questions to the DSB staff member they are assisting.
  • Able to be helpful without being demeaning.
  • Must be discrete and maintain confidentiality.
  • Use sound judgment and decision making.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Conduct oneself in a respectful, professional, and appropriate manner at all times. Supplemental Information
