Kelly Engineering Resources has an outstanding direct hire opportunity for a Product Development Engineer. This position is with an injection molding manufacturer located in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. Our client is an international manufacturer of decorative plastic products used in the automotive and consumer products industry. Due to growth, they are searching Product Development Engineer with experience in injection molding and decorative finishing processes.

Job Scope of the Product Development Engineer: Lead design and development efforts of injection molded products. Utilize knowledge of tooling process, molding process, finishing process to create innovative products that meet customer specifications. Take the lead role in assuring and maintaining product design and specifications meet and exceed internal and external customer specifications while maintaining good design standards.

Essential Responsibilities of the Product Development Engineer:

Analyze data to develop and improve product design, material and processes for decorative plastic injection molding. Play a key role in supporting the simultaneous design of the part, the tool, and the process. Support the entire corporate – supplier - customer value stream through new and existing product development, technical assistance, communication on engineering, design and application issues, modeling, tooling and fixturing and continuous improvement. Perform part designs and revisions by utilizing Pro-E Creo system as part of daily activities. Perform appropriate testing and design evaluation, validation, and verification. Process engineering workflows and ECN’s following establish protocol. Manage CAD files, hard copies, specifications, procedures, according to document control procedures. Travel up to 15-20% nationally to customers, and internationally to Mexico or China to resolve manufacturability issues.

Qualifications of the Successful Product Development Engineer:

Required experience and education:

BS in Engineering & 5 years' experience or 8 years’ experience in development of injection molded products including decorative finishes Good understanding of mechanical designs and processes, specifically on tooling, machining, plating and pad printing. Ability to define part fit and tolerance is required. Working experience on plastic part design, especially for decorative, tight tolerance and high volume production

Experience with injection mold process or plastic part assembly processes Experience with mold flow simulation. Experience with plastic materials, characteristics, and properties.

Proven knowledge in injection mold design and molding process. Knowledge of 2-shot molding and Gas assist molding is a plus. Knowledge of plastic decorating processes, including:

pad printing transfer printing Painting Electroplating PVD plating laser etching IML/IMD.

Good communication skills on both written and verbal, including customer and supplier interface Proficiency with Creo 2.0 or higher.

Experience Pluses

Knowledge in either ISO or TS 16949, working in consumer products/automotive industries is a plus. Fluent in Spanish a plus
