Basic Purpose: Working as part of a small, agile team to design and implement new features and technologies. Delivering high quality, high performance code in an agile environment. Using, evaluating, and learning exciting new technologies that keep our products and teams on the cutting edge. As a key member of the team, this individual will help design, develop, and maintain complex JEE solutions with a focus on quality, performance, and resiliency.
Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Develop key product features and complex software solutions within existing large-scale enterprise applications and new strategic initiatives using preferred languages 2. Collaborate with cross-functional partners (QA, Business Analyst, Tech Pubs, etc.) in an Agile/Scrum team environment. 3. Assist with the generation and analysis of business and functional requirements for proposed software solutions. 4. Participate in architectural and database design discussions as they relate to product direction. 5. Create design specifications, documentation, and unit testing plans as defined by the Agile development process. 6. Complete development tasks independently as well as under direction from the product architect and development leads. 7. Maintain and support software solutions post-production. 8. Develop features completely including the front-end components and the backend systems. 9. Work closely with other engineers to develop the best technical design and approach for new product development.
Qualifications: Education Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Work Experience:
2-3 years of professional experience in software development or technical engineering capacity.
2+ years of experience with custom application software development using Java. Other:
Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented (OO) design patterns, distributed databases, and data modeling techniques
Experience in development of distributed/scalable systems and high-volume transaction applications.
Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
The following are preferred but not required:
1+ years of experience using Java enterprise technologies (JEE).
Server-side technologies such as WebLogic, Messaging/MOM (JMS, MQSeries), EJB 2.0/3.0, and Web Services (SOAP, REST).
Database design and writing complex SQL in an Oracle environment.
Experience in an Agile development environment utilizing the Scrum methodology.
Experience with web or hosted/cloud-based applications that handle high-volume and require high-uptime and performance (preferably JEE-based).
Knowledge of healthcare messaging standards such as HL7, NCPDP, and DIRECT. Physical and Mental:

Job Function The primary responsibility of this role is the development and support of the standard Quest Diagnostics microbiology lab system (QMPS), using InterSystems Caché technology. Working as part of a small development team, the Software Engineer will develop new programs and make enhancements to existing programs in order to deliver new functionality to the microbiology departments and for management reporting. All aspects of the standard system development life cycle (SDLC) are in the scope of this role, such as problem analysis, functional design, technical design, code development, unit testing, integration testing and documentation. This role will have close Interactions with IT project managers, business analysts and test engineers, and will have direct communications with microbiology users and with key business stakeholders. The role will also involve interactions with other IT groups such as architecture, solutions design and the program management office. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are a requirement. Participation in design review teams for peer projects is encouraged. Agile and waterfall methodologies are both used, depending on the project type. Small projects will be self-managed, with larger projects being run by a project manager. Required Knowledge: Caché ObjectScript. Caché Server Pages (CSP) Web Services SQL XML Required Experience: Strong understanding of information systems concepts, applicable methodologies, tools, standards and procedures. Development and design experience using InterSystems Caché technology, such as Caché ObjectScript. Experience with clinical laboratory systems or healthcare information systems. Project tracking and requirements management using a tool such as Rally. Defect tracking using a tool such as SmartBear QAComplete. Document and resource management using a tool such as Clarity PPM. Collaborative design using a wiki or similar tool. Experience of working in a regulatory compliant environment with the associated attention to detail. Ability to provide high quality, timely support to a mission-critical application. Knowledge of HL7 and ICD-10 would be advantageous. Special Requirements: Primary support for this application is provided by a dedicated support team, however secondary support is required on a rotational on-call basis. Project implementations may need to be done outside normal hours during downtime coordinated with the laboratories.
