Duties

The Inpatient Mental Health Social Worker will be assigned to provide all appropriate social work services on inpatient mental health units. This position is located at Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System in West Los Angeles. A GS-9/11 Social Worker has a Masters Degree in Social Work granted by a graduate program fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Individuals assigned as GS-11 Social Workers are considered to be at the full performance level. Promotion to the GS-11 full performance level requires a license at the independent practice level with a minimum of 1 year of post-MSW degree experience in the field ofhealthcare social work. The Social Worker will complete psychosocial mental health assessments of patients, develop comprehensive discharge plans, and assist with mental health education. Provides advance care planning, education on Advance Directives and assists with their completion. The Inpatient Mental Health social worker independently conducts psychosocial mental health assessments, interviewing Veterans and their family members to establish facts about problems impacting their lives. Performs assessments involving complicated cases such as psychiatric illness, medical conditions, and high-risk diagnoses. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary treatment team, develops treatment plans during the Veteran's inpatient stay and formulates comprehensive discharge plans for the Veteran's care upon leaving the hospital. This plan includes outpatient treatment programs, housing options, assistance with connection to financial resources and all other resources to ensure the continuity of care for the patient. Provides referrals to additional services and other government and community based programs. Facilitates referrals based upon Veteran's needs and eligibility. Will document all patient contact. Completes encounters, consults, and clinical reminders. Social Worker must have working knowledge of the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures to include acute, chronic, traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects. Social worker will work with patients and families with various psychiatric, medical and social problems utilizing individual, group/family counseling and psychoeducation. Provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates family conferences and serves as liaison to family members. Provides consultation service to other staff regarding the psychosocial needs of the Veterans and the impact of the psychosocial problems on health care/mental health care.

Social Worker with a license at an independent practice level is expected to provide coverage in the Emergency Department on weeknights, weekends, and holidays, as needed, and assist with social work transplant assessments.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Education- Applicants must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master’s degree in social work. (Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if your social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work). You must submit copy of transcripts (unofficial copies will be accepted). All education claimed by applicants will be verified by the appointing agency accordingly. Transcripts must be submitted with application.

Grade Determinations:

GS-9: None beyond basic requirements

  • To qualify at the GS9 level you must possess a Master’s degree in social work from a program approved by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), including but not limited to the Masters in Social Work (MSW) and must be a US Citizen and be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).

  • GS-11: LICENSURE- Applicants must be licensed by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level and possess a minimum of one (1) year post-MSW degree experience in the field of health care social work (VA or non-VA experience) or possess a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work.

Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185-11 series and grade in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at the advance practice level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.

Preferred Experience: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements indicated above, Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of practice skills and judgment. Social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the independent practice level which included an LCSW clinical examination.Experienced is required in Knowledge and ability to perform duties independently to include but not limited to clinical evaluation and psychotherapeutic treatment interventions, crisis management, social work consultation, biopsychosocial assessments and evaluations
