Under the direct supervision of the OR Supervisor and general direction of the Surgical Services Manager, the Lead Surgical Technologist primarily a plans for and scrubs assigned surgical procedures and has oversight over service line he/she has accepted responsibility for. The Lead Surgical Technologist implements a continuous self-directed needs assessment and process improvement actions for the service line. Responsibility includes ensuring that there are sufficient specialty supplies, instrumentation, and equipment for scheduled cases that belong to that particular service line; communicating with surgeons to identify any special needs; providing education and support to other staff with new developments and changes to the service line; and ensuring that surgeon preference cards are up-to-date.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Plans for and scrubs assigned surgical procedures in accordance with AORN, AST, quality, regulatory, and company standards.
Participates in on-call rotation based on the need of the department.
Operates the sterilizer and other patient care equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions after proper training.
Promotes hospital processes and goals, and communicates issues, whether actual or potential, to appropriate person in the chain of command.
Takes initiative in performing other duties, whether assigned or not, such as assisting with, pulling case carts, stocking rooms, turning-over the OR, and assisting with scheduled supply inventory.
Proactively reviews OR schedule daily at least a week in advance to plan and prepare for surgical cases belonging to assigned service line, ensuring adequate supplies, instruments, and equipment, and implementing actions to resolve identified needs or potential issues.
Maintains open communication with surgeons, vendors, supervisors, and other staff; promotes accomplishment of departmental, facility, and supply chain goals; and assumes the role of resource person, providing education, guidance, and leadership as needed to improve delivery of care within the service line.
Maintains an up-to-date and effective surgeon preference cards within the service line. Takes ownership and accepts responsibility for own actions and decisions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
At least two years of clinical experience in acute care OR setting required.
BLS from American Heart Association
Surgical Technologist Certification or grandfathered status
