Summary

The Curator is responsible for developing and managing museum collections and exhibit programs, as well as assisting the supervisor in administering museum activities. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Typical Functions

Acquires museum items, by purchase or acceptance of donations, to develop and ensure collection growth in the museum, archives, and library. Researches and writes history and descriptions of collection items, to properly illustrate displays, and catalogs items. Develops and implements a conservation program, to preserve the collections, and monitors the maintenance and storage of exhibits. Selects and develops museum exhibitions and directs and coordinates exhibit activities. Analyzes and recommends museum needs to supervisor and participates in policy and procedure development. Reviews financial information to project needs, prepares budget for supervisor's approval, and monitors expenditures. Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Special Job Dimensions

Occasional in-state and weekend travel is required. Valid Arkansas driver's license is required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and human resources. Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and effects on civilizations and cultures. Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media. Ability to develop specific goals and plans to preserve and organize museum collections. Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written formats.

Minimum Education and/or Experience

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, art history or related field; plus four years of work-related experience. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. This position is with the Delta Cultural Center division of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. The is a full time position with a salary of $35,554 per year, and offers a full benefit package including paid holidays, annual and sick leave, health and life insurance and retirement.

Job Duties: 1. Coordinate exhibit design, planning, production, and installation. 2. Catalogs current museum items and new acquisitions according to established methods and practices. 3. Manages database for museum collections, including items both in archives and in exhibits. 4. Prepares and cares for historical items. 5. Develop/increase the museum collection by identifying, evaluating, and acquiring artifacts necessary for the fulfillment in the scope of the museum’s mission. Develop and implement museum management on long range plans and policies. Cultivate and establishes contacts with potential donors. Build the collections for the museum through gift and purchases and direct research to support the collection acquisitions. 6. Supervise small to medium-sized staff of museum employees and also work crews and student interns by interviewing, recommending for hire, training, assigning and reviewing work. 7. Researches and compiles materials for inclusion in the museum’s archives and for the use in museum’s exhibits. 8. Attends workshops and meetings to keep informed of current trends in the museum field. 9. Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Applicants must meet or exceed): The formal educational equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, art history, or related field; plus four years of work related experience.

Special Requirements: A valid drivers’ license and pre-employment criminal background check are required. This position is subject to drug screening. Occasional work outside normal business hours and occasional in-state and out-of-state travel may be required.
