The Plumbing, Fire Suppression and Utilities unit of the Facilities Management Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all plumbing, fire suppression and campus utilities distribution of steam and chilled water for a campus with facilities totaling 2.4 million square feet comprising of 474 acres.

Description of Job

This position exists to troubleshoot, repair, replace, rebuild, install, test, inspect, and design steam/condensate, plumbing and mechanical piping systems to maintain proper building operation. Duties include analyzing, repairing, replacing, installing and remodeling plumbing and mechanical piping systems and their related components in new and existing locations on campus as a fully functional journeyman. The type of work performed by this position is commonly referred to as pipe fitting. The tasks include but are not limited to layout ,measure cut, join, solder, weld, thread, braze, etc. of mechanical piping systems including heating water, cooling water, natural gas , condenser water, compressed air, sewer, domestic water etc.

Additionally, the Pipe Fitter/Steam Fitter analyzes, repairs, replaces, Installs and remodels high and low pressure steam systems and their related components as a fully functional journeyman. The components include but are not limited to steam traps, steam pressure regulators, steam control and isolation valves, steam safety valves, condensate pumping devices, steam and condensate piping, etc. In order to repair these systems, piping and devices must be joined using many different methods such as welding, soldering, threading, braising etc. Prepares drawings and material lists for upcoming projects and completes the required information on work orders forms, test reports, and purchase requests. Position serves as a member of the asbestos team if requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of progressively responsible experience with steam/condensate, plumbing and mechanical piping systems. Must have basic computer skills in order to enter work orders into a computerized work order system, use email and perform basic spreadsheet and word processor computer work. This position will interact with internal and external customers daily and must have excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills.


Successful completion of a formalized plumbing, pipe fitting or steam fitting apprenticeship program, or higher level, non-correspondence course work in the same fields from an accredited vocational school or university may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis. *YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS OR OTHER DOCUMENTATION TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THIS SUBSTITUTION. * A journey level plumber license can substitute for the required experience.

Desired Qualifications Certified welder passing a 6" 6G ASME or AWS test Denver Steam Fitters certificate

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Must be willing and able to work varying shift assignments.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver license and have a clean driving record with no DUI/DWAI convictions within the past five years. *(A copy of your current motor vehicle record (MVR) will be required as a condition of hire). *
  • Must be physically able to perform strenuous physical labor including lifting up to 100 pounds.
