Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

To provide Clinical Nursing services to care of medical, surgical and pediatric patients. The incumbent reports to Supervisory Clinical Nurse on the assigned units. This position is located at Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Indian Health Services (IHS), Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), Division of Nursing Services, Medical/Surgical Unit/2W/3W and Pediatric Unit, Gallup, NM.

  • Performs professional nursing care of medical, surgical, orthopedic and pediatric patients.
  • Performs administrative and clinical duties.
  • Administers therapeutic measures such as medications, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, etc.
  • Operates and monitors specialized equipment.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency continuing education, staff meetings, workshops and serving on nursing committees. Includes preceptorship.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Examples of specialized experience for the Nurse/Clinical Nurse includes: work experience reflecting knowledge of hospital policy and procedures relating to patient care. Work experience managing patient care in varying medical situations. This includes assessing the needs of patients with a wide variety of illnesses, administering medications, operating special equipment and responding appropriately to emergency situations.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain an active, unrestricted Nursing license in any State (U.S.). If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

GS-04: Completion of a program of less than 30 months' duration or associate degree OR 1 year of nursing experience as a military corpsman.

GS-05: Completion of a program of less than 30 months' duration or associate degree OR 1 year of professional nursing, OR of at least GS-04 level practical nurse or nursing assistant experience under the supervision of a professional nurse OR Completion of a program of at least 30 months' duration or 4 academic years above high school or bachelor's degree.

GS-07: Completion of a professional nursing program OR 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level OR 1 full year of graduate education OR bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement.

GS-09: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level.
