This position is located at the the Eagle Butte IHS Health Care Center, Eagle Butte, SD which is a 13 bed hospital, ambulatory care and emergency room setting. The purpose of this position is to initiate and implement infection Control standards throughout the hospital and to manage the Employee Health Program. This position is supervised by the Hospital Accreditation Specialist.

  • Direct a comprehensive hospital-wide Infection Control Program to prevent, identify, and to control infections acquired in the hospital or brought into the hospital from the community.
  • Consults with the administrative staff/supervisor, and chairs the Infection Control Committee on the objectives and goals of the hospital concerning infection control issues. Long range plans and goals are prioritized.
  • Develops standards policies, and guidelines to ensure that they are in compliance with federal, state, and other regulatory standards.
  • Maintains records, collects data, and handles correspondence pertinent to the Infection Control/Employee Health Programs.
  • Monitors and documents surveillance/performance improvement activities to ensure compliance with the standards.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below


GS-09:One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service performing work that equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree orPh.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Specialized Experience:Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Example of Specialized Experience: Experience initiating and implementing Infection Control Standards throughout a hospital or clinic setting. Experience managing an Employee Health Program. Experience directing a comprehensive Infection Control Program to prevent, identify, and to control infections acquired in or brought to hospital or clinic setting. Experience consulting with administrative staff/supervisors on objectives and goals of the hospital concerning infection control issues including prioritizing long and short term program goals. Experience monitoring and documenting surveillance and performance improvement activities to ensure compliance with standards. Experience maintaining records, collecting data, and handles correspondence pertinent to the Infection Control and Employee Health Program. Experience educating staff on applicable infection control principles and standards. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
