General Motors OnStar Core Services System Engineer - GCC0001281 in Detroit, Michigan

This group works to ensure core services are operating and functioning properly and the services are delivered successfully to millions of active

subscribers. This individual will act as a technical lead Systems Engineer, responsible for the performance of OnStar

core services and other supporting systems from END to END. Will ensure all systems are interacting and functioning

as designed to meet high service levels. Interact with other Subject Matter Expert’s to detect system failures and to

troubleshoot and root cause the nature of these failures. Engage IT development and sustain teams to create solutions

to resolve issues. Responsibilities include performing technical validation/analysis, developing system service level

objectives for global initiatives, defining requirements for new product launches, detailing technical/validation steps and

building analytical tools using database methodologies


As a System Engineer, work closely with engineering, wireless network engineering, IT development/sustain and business

teams. Perform the following tasks applying understanding of applications, backend infrastructure and HW systems.

- Monitor core services system performance to maintain highest possible service delivery rates

- Ensure adequate system requirements are documented for changes to the system platforms by maintaining a close

working relationship with IT, Service Delivery, and Engineering departments

- Identify systemic issues affecting system performance and create strategies to improve performance

- Design and develop performance metrics that represent E2E service delivery performance

- Assist IT sustain team in identifying and troubleshooting production issues

- Utilize support tools to resubmit errors caused by production incidents to mitigate impact to customers

- Select appropriate regression test cases to be run for SIT/UAT end to end performance, review test results, and write

new test cases if necessary for new content

- Handle escalated customer care cases involving systems related issues

- Keep abreast of current product developments and trends in areas of expertise

- Prepare and present project plans, status reports, cost/benefit analysis and budgets to leadership

- Assist in developing solutions to unusual and difficult problems

Required Skills and Experience:

- Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related degree or equivalent experience

- Java, .net, C++, shell scripting, UNIX, Oracle programming experience preferred

- Big Data experience preferred

- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in a system engineering or an operational role

- High level of oral and written communication skills

- Experience working with technical team during time sensitive/issue resolution incident management

- Ability to work with cross enterprise members to support the identification and resolution of system and process issues

- Strong understanding of operational procedures, protocols and communication paths

- Strong understanding of application architecture and design principles related to system integration of client components,

web services, and databases

- Strong using and interacting with relational database structures (Oracle databases)

- Strong understanding of SQL and SQL development

- Sound organizational skills to prioritize work to be executed

- Ability to identify system issues and improvement

- Sound communication and presentation skills to deliver status updates and progress against objectives to the


- Demonstrated ability to establish strong cross organization working relationships

- Knowledge and understanding in Network performance of CDMA and GSM technology
