General Motors Data Scientist - Legal - LEG0000499 in Detroit, Michigan

The Data Scientist is responsible for litigation analysis, benchmarking of product liability claims, plaintiff’s attorneys, and defense attorneys, and identifying emerging vehicle issues within the privileged legal database and the safety databases by analyzing, mining, and monitoring relevant data. This requires identifying trends and patterns in Team Connect and other databases.

Must be analytical, adaptable, and very detail oriented, producing high quality and accurate work product.


–Identify and quantify theunderlying factors driving claim filings and values

–Develop exploratory dataanalysis approach for production of product litigation defense model andattorney demographics

–Develop analyticalapproaches to measure the effectiveness of counsel using actuarial and otherdata driven methodology

–Develop analyticalapproaches to identify potential emerging issues through data analysis andreporting

–Manage Large and ComplexElectronic Datasets

–Perform analysis using textmining, data mining, and analytical tools

–Understand legal and safetydata and how to use it appropriately in data analysis

–Collaboratecross-functionally with other data analytics teams to arrive at actionableinsights

–Support feedback of ontologyand taxonomy for legal and safety issues to ensure text mining is comprehensive

–Apply best-in-class emergingissues methodologies for issue identification.

–Participate in technicalmeetings to discuss data findings

Required skills:

–5+ years of work experience inAnalytics or Business Intelligence

–Master’s degree in AppliedStatistics/Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or related field

–Highly proficient with one ormore data mining/predictive modeling tools such as SAS, JMP, R, Python, Aster,or Watson as well as proficient in SQL.

–Knowledge of statisticalgraphics and experience with visualization tools such as Tableau

–Strong quantitative skills andstrong business acumen required

–Strong knowledge of statisticalmethods such as categorical data analysis, multivariate analysis, regressionanalysis, survey sampling design, survival/reliability analysis, design ofexperiments, analysis of variance

–Ability to effectivelycommunicate results and methodologies. Must be comfortable presenting toexecutive leadership

–Must have strong drive forresults and be a self-starter

–Strong understanding andexperience with predictive / analytical modeling techniques, theories,principles, and practices.

–Previous experience withstatistical modeling, text mining, and/or machine learning

–Experience with datapreparation, rationalization, and processing

–Willingness to learn new skillsand methods as needed – continuous learning mindset

–Understanding of vehicletechnologies including design intent, function and intended performance in thefield


–Knowledge of GM IT systems andprocesses

–Five or more years ofexperience in the legal or automotive industries

–Experience with dealing withboth structured and unstructured data
