- Position Summary:*The Medical Assistant assists with patient examinations and treatments, performs various tests, and maintains medical equipment and supplies. Assesses needs of patients. Must be able to distinguish between an emergency and non-emergency situation and prioritize accordingly. Maintains a professional and workable relationship with providers. Document all activities in the medical record appropriately. Job duties include: • Prepare patient for examination (measure height, weight, vital signs) • Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with examinations and treatments • Perform various tests (urinalysis, blood draws) • Order medical supplies as needed • Inspect and maintain medical equipment and working areas • Stock supplies in examination rooms • May perform other duties under direction of Registered Nurse and within scope of practice. • Aware of patient's right to privacy and questions, when needed, regarding release of information. • Demonstrates the ability to work independently. • Communicates work status to the Charge Nurse on an ongoing basis. Immediately informs the Charge Nurse of any backlogs, delays, or problems. • Assists in other clinic functions as needed. • Answers telephone inquires and interacts with colleagues in a professional manner.

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Graduate from Medical Assistant program. MA Certification preferred. BLS certified.
B. Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
C. Experience: One year experience in hospital or outpatient setting.
D. Special Qualifications: Basic understanding of medical terminology. Strong organizational and critical thinking skills. Able to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other health care team members. Able to function as a part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure quality patient care.
Degree of supervision required: Involves general guidance and direction by the Charge Nurse. Employee will be expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and clinic policies and procedures.
IV. Ages of Patients Served: This position requires knowledge of growth and developmental needs of patients and families. Personnel in this position must recognize and respond to the behaviors of patients and families in each age category. The employee must be able to demonstrate the special skills required to care for patients and their families according to standards. (The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience.)
