Under the general direction of the Clinical Coordinator and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Unit Secretary/Nurse Tech provides a variety of clerical activities as well as accommodative services to the adolescent, adult, geriatric, and newborn patients admitted to the Women’s, Newborn & Pediatric Services. The Unit Secretary/Nurse Tech supports the medical care of patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse pursuant to the mission and objectives of the hospital. The Unit Secretary/Nurse Tech will appropriately communicate with physicians, co-workers, volunteers, other hospital departments, and patient family members. The Unit Secretary/Nurse Tech must be able to assess own learning needs to enhance personal and professional development. The Unit Secretary/Nurse Tech will increase knowledge and skills related to patient care by attending workshops, formal classes, seminars and inservices. Job Description 1. Schedules tests or procedures in appropriate sequence and in a timely manner. 2. Appropriately enters orders in the Meditech system. 3. Notifies appropriate departments if indicated. 4. Locates and obtains prior medical records as requested. c. Posts all test results on the patient record. d. Is proficient in the use of medical terminology and abbreviations. e. Assists with admission, discharge, and/or pre and post operative patients. 1. Receives patient record from accompanying personnel. 2. Assemble and places in a hardback cover. 3. Disassembles patient record correctly upon patient discharge or transfer. f. Prepares admission paperwork and gives to admitting nurse. g. Orders forms, office supplies and dietary supplies as needed and on appropriate days. h. Enters daily unit charges into the computer. I. Cleans restock and maintains work environment. J. Safely and effectively utilizes specialized equipment in the provision of patient care. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the following area. 1. Code blue response 2. Age-specific competencies k. Appropriately accounts for unit and patient supplies per policy. l. Performs daily unit maintenance as assigned.
Assists in provision of individualized patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse. a. Obtains vital signs, reports to primary nurse and documents on the graphic record. b. Records intake and output on appropriate form with notification of licensed nurse of amounts. c. Assists with distribution and collection of patient nourishments and trays; assist in feeding patients. d. Assists patient with activities of daily living--oral care, bathing, positioning, elimination. e. Is proficient in the use of medical terminology and the use of medical abbreviations. f. Discusses all care with primary nurse.
- Practices appropriate safety measures in assisting patients with activities of daily living.
Performs nursing skills efficiently according to operational guidelines and
Assists with admission, discharge, and/or pre and post-operative patients. a. Assures patient is made comfortable and oriented to room. b. Assists nurse in obtaining belonging inventory.
Safely and effectively utilizes specialized equipment in the provision of patient care. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the following area: a. Code blue responses b. Age-specific competencies 8 Reports changes in patient’s condition to primary licensed nurse responsible for patient. 9 Appropriately accounts for unit and patient supplies per policy.
- Cleans, restocks, and/or maintains equipment and work environment.
- Performs daily unit maintenance as assigned.
IV. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS A. Completion of Nurse Aid Program and C.N.A with the state of Texas preferred B. BLS certified C. Previous hospital experience preferred.
